Always so exciting to get the digital auction preview catalogue from LOTG. I think there's is the best in the business. While it's not news to anyone how great LOTG is, I thought people could share some of their personal favorite items from the auction, or other auctions this summer. Disclosure: I haven't consigned any of the ones below (although I did consign some other items).
1) 1923-24 Tomas Gutierrez Oscar Charleston Rookie. I believe less than 10 of these have been graded by PSA and SGC combined, with only 1 higher by SGC. 2) 1878 Buffalo Bisons team card with Pud Galvin. What a great piece of history, nearly 150 years old. 3) Ticket stub from September 24, 1919, the day Babe Ruth broke Ned Williamson's record for HRs in a season with 28. While I don't think people were necessarily aware of the history being made on that day, it was sort of the start of Ruths' many records to come. 4) A great picture of the 1915 Red Sox during Ruth's second year. He is standing very visible in the top right (sorry for the blurry screenshots). Do other people have standouts from the LOTG, REA, Huggins Scott or other auctions this summer? I can't find the full preview on the LOTG website. The bottom right of the main page shows just five cards, including the Charleston, but not everything shown in the original post. Where can I find the full preview?

I was hoping no one else would notice the lots that I was hoping to win, so didn’t mention them here until they closed tonight.
Still cost me a pretty penny though. So not much of a strategy to avoid outing my targets. https://bid.hugginsandscott.com/bids...?itemid=219434 https://bid.hugginsandscott.com/bids...?itemid=219435

Thanks Phil - there is an SGC 80 Speaker orange as well. Hopefully one of them will find a home in my run at some point, but the finances wouldn't let me continue any further last night!

As a Ruth Red Sox collector, of course love the rookie team photo above and photos from the Red Sox Draper & Maynard factory visit. That HR record breaking ticket is also incredible.
There's also a 1916 World Series 3-game ticket which fans would have used to see Ruth's WS pitching debut & historic 14-inning performance. Full disclosure that's my consignment as I found two from the original owner on eBay last year. Sports Collectors Daily did a recent short article about the tickets too... Not to overlook the LOTG & REA auctions, those have great pieces.
But i just browsed the 'preview' for Memory Lane....holy crap! TONS of Babe Ruth on the front page. Preview: https://memorylaneinc.com/site/Lots/Gallery?page=1 (not affiliated with this AH)

Weird that everyone is selling but we all know that prices on the Cobbs have to keep going up.

I just got the paper catalog for LOTG today, and discovered a unique problem.
The smell of the ink and paper is too strong; I can't turn the pages without the smell affecting my breathing. This is the first time I've ever had this problem, although many times, I don't even look at the paper catalogs for any of the auction houses, as I rely on the website listings. Steve

Me personally I know longer look at the catalogs( even though many enjoy it) and I have tried stopping them from several auction houses and no luck.
In some ways it makes no sense as often I get the catalogs after the auction is open It also does not make sense that many the catalogs are not always grouped or organized (I am sure they try but as they keep getting submitted cards that they add to the auction) but online I least I can sort or search.

Believe it or not there are some true luddites out there who do not use online services. I know one collector who doesn't own a computer or even a cell phone. He lives like it is 1975 and wants paper catalogs. He still calls in bids. Dinosaurs like that are on the way out, but as long as they exist, the AHs will spend the $ on a printed catalog.
I also would prefer not to receive catalogs; just a waste of paper and gas delivering them. I've got REA's brick sitting on my desk, unopened, until I toss it into recycling tomorrow. They aren't even useful for archival research since all of the AHs have their results online anyway.

The person I corresponded with was tmitchell@robertedwardauctions.com Other auction houses allow you to opt out as well as discussed in this thread: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=334835 Last edited by cgjackson222; 08-13-2023 at 08:29 AM. |

Personally, I think people should have a way to opt out of catalogs and, since not having to mail a catalog and lower printing numbers saves the auction house money, they should get a small credit for doing so.

It will be interesting to see how the Old Judges do in REA. Prices were strong in HA and the trend seems to be continuing. I am especially interested to see how the scarce Deacon White card does.
