Love of the Game's (and other) summer auctions

Always so exciting to get the digital auction preview catalogue from LOTG. I think there's is the best in the business. While it's not news to anyone how great LOTG is, I thought people could share some of their personal favorite items from the auction, or other auctions this summer. Disclosure: I haven't consigned any of the ones below (although I did consign some other items).

1) 1923-24 Tomas Gutierrez Oscar Charleston Rookie. I believe less than 10 of these have been graded by PSA and SGC combined, with only 1 higher by SGC.

2) 1878 Buffalo Bisons team card with Pud Galvin. What a great piece of history, nearly 150 years old.

3) Ticket stub from September 24, 1919, the day Babe Ruth broke Ned Williamson's record for HRs in a season with 28. While I don't think people were necessarily aware of the history being made on that day, it was sort of the start of Ruths' many records to come.

4) A great picture of the 1915 Red Sox during Ruth's second year. He is standing very visible in the top right (sorry for the blurry screenshots).

Do other people have standouts from the LOTG, REA, Huggins Scott or other auctions this summer?

oldjudge 08-02-2023 04:00 PM

Love that Charleston card. Not mine, although I wish it was 😁

mrreality68 08-02-2023 04:24 PM

That is a nice photo with Ruth and lot’s of great cards

The Detroit Collector 08-02-2023 05:34 PM

Love the digital catalog they send out. Lots of great stuff in the auction.

paul 08-02-2023 11:44 PM

I own a counterfeit of that Charleston card. I'll sell it cheap!

paul 08-03-2023 12:05 AM

I can't find the full preview on the LOTG website. The bottom right of the main page shows just five cards, including the Charleston, but not everything shown in the original post. Where can I find the full preview?

Do not need the Link now the auction is open some amazing pre 1900 stuff

paul 08-03-2023 04:35 PM

Yes, I saw. Thank you and thanks to Kevin for the link.

Sounds good Paul

And good luck on your hunt.
So many great items at the same time across so many auction houses.
Sensory and monetary overload

And good luck to all. Hope to see a lot on August pickups

Casey2296 08-03-2023 08:24 PM

The Ruth's in Memory Lane are amazing.

I was hoping no one else would notice the lots that I was hoping to win, so didn’t mention them here until they closed tonight.

Still cost me a pretty penny though. So not much of a strategy to avoid outing my targets.

Congrats to whoever won the E94 Close Candy Sam Crawford PSA 8 in the Huggins and Scott auction last night.

You wore me down with your bidding.

It wasn't me, but I was trying to get the E94 orange Speaker last night. Both of those were the second orange copies to surface, I believe. I finally had to check out as the underbidder on the Speaker, so congrats to whoever got it, and keep me in mind when it's time for you to sell it!

I was wondering if you were on that one Scott, would have been a nice addition to your run. I believe it's the only Orange Speaker, the Crawford is the second confirmed Orange.
Correction: a member confirmed there are two Orange Speakers.

Thanks Phil - there is an SGC 80 Speaker orange as well. Hopefully one of them will find a home in my run at some point, but the finances wouldn't let me continue any further last night!

Its interesting that the three known doubles are all high grade. Cobb, Crawford, and Speaker.

Nice, Nico, congrats.

I needed some vintage on my table for when we go to Deer Valley.

Bicem 08-06-2023 09:04 AM

As a Ruth Red Sox collector, of course love the rookie team photo above and photos from the Red Sox Draper & Maynard factory visit. That HR record breaking ticket is also incredible.

There's also a 1916 World Series 3-game ticket which fans would have used to see Ruth's WS pitching debut & historic 14-inning performance. Full disclosure that's my consignment as I found two from the original owner on eBay last year.

Sports Collectors Daily did a recent short article about the tickets too...

Not to overlook the LOTG & REA auctions, those have great pieces.

But i just browsed the 'preview' for Memory Lane....holy crap!
TONS of Babe Ruth on the front page.

I am a little overwhelmed by the number and quality of auctions this summer. There are some really great cards changing hands.

Just as one example, 31 T206 Cobbs in REA.

Snapolit1 08-12-2023 02:21 PM

Weird that everyone is selling but we all know that prices on the Cobbs have to keep going up.

Zero risk. Defies logic.

Yes, that goes without saying. As well as any card I might have interest in.

The number of rare Ruth's on that first page is ridiculous.:eek:

I just got the paper catalog for LOTG today, and discovered a unique problem.

The smell of the ink and paper is too strong; I can't turn the pages without the smell affecting my breathing. This is the first time I've ever had this problem, although many times, I don't even look at the paper catalogs for any of the auction houses, as I rely on the website listings.

I love LOTG, but I’ve never been able to get them to stop sending me a paper catalogue, despite several email requests. I just received mine again. I may not even bother to open it if it’s just going to stink up my house.

mrreality68 08-13-2023 06:19 AM

Me personally I know longer look at the catalogs( even though many enjoy it) and I have tried stopping them from several auction houses and no luck.
In some ways it makes no sense as often I get the catalogs after the auction is open
It also does not make sense that many the catalogs are not always grouped or organized (I am sure they try but as they keep getting submitted cards that they add to the auction) but online I least I can sort or search.

Auction catalogs go directly into recycling at my house, Jeff. I have also tried to stop them but they keep coming. My understanding is that auctioneers believe sellers insist on a paper catalog.

Exhibitman 08-13-2023 07:58 AM

Believe it or not there are some true luddites out there who do not use online services. I know one collector who doesn't own a computer or even a cell phone. He lives like it is 1975 and wants paper catalogs. He still calls in bids. Dinosaurs like that are on the way out, but as long as they exist, the AHs will spend the $ on a printed catalog.

I also would prefer not to receive catalogs; just a waste of paper and gas delivering them. I've got REA's brick sitting on my desk, unopened, until I toss it into recycling tomorrow. They aren't even useful for archival research since all of the AHs have their results online anyway.

Back in November of 2021, REA emailed me to see if I wanted the catalogue. I responded that I didn't, and they haven't sent one since.

The person I corresponded with was tmitchell@robertedwardauctions.com

Other auction houses allow you to opt out as well as discussed in this thread: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=334835

oldjudge 08-13-2023 01:40 PM

Personally, I think people should have a way to opt out of catalogs and, since not having to mail a catalog and lower printing numbers saves the auction house money, they should get a small credit for doing so.

sb1 08-13-2023 02:09 PM

Huggins and Scott does or did give a credit...not sure if that is continued now with the sale of the company to REA.

oldjudge 08-13-2023 02:21 PM

It will be interesting to see how the Old Judges do in REA. Prices were strong in HA and the trend seems to be continuing. I am especially interested to see how the scarce Deacon White card does.

I stayed up for this, just in case, and sure enough someone was after it after midnight (REA). I bumped my Autobid a few times. It was too nice to pass up :-)

that was me. thought it was the nicest Patsy I'd ever seen -- congrats on the win.

srik 08-14-2023 02:33 PM

It's only stuff, but can translate into 1s and 0s that are accepted anywhere. My worry would have been if I passed away or needed to sell, the market wouldn't have cooperated. It's one less worry for myself and my family with the bulk of it sold.

Collector's are likely selling into strength. Is this a top? Who knows. Consumer credit card debt just hit 1 trillion dollars! This was interesting "affluent families carrying $8K in debt still have some dry powder". This is not going to end well.
