without peeking I'd say Mays, Barry Bonds, Griffey Jr. for sure, And guess Aaron and Mantle

EDIT: Why did I think the question said 5 guys?

.
Bonds has far and away the most with a total of 1,276 combined. He is the only on the list to amass more than 400 steals, with 514.

Mays had 999 total HRs and steals, including his 339 steals.

Aaron had 995 total HRs and steals, including his 240 steals.

Surprisingly, Griffey Jr. (184), and Mantle (153) did not make the cut.

5 more

Damn, Mantle I understand, because SB's were kind of forgotten about during his era (plus the knee issues), but why did I think Griffey Jr. was a gimme?

Reggie Jackson? He didn't steal many later in his career, but think he ran the bases a bit during his A's days.

YES! Reggie stole 228 bases. He was the most surprising on the list to me.

Yes, ARod is the only is the only player besides Bonds to have 1,000 combined HRs and steals, as he stole 329 bases.

3 more to go.

I'm going with some of Hank Aaron's contemporaries:

Frank Robinson
Ernie Banks
Willie McCovey

No idea if they were fast, but I didn't think Hank Aaron was fast.

Well done! Frank Robinson just made the cut with 204 steals.

Banks (50) and Mccovey (26) were not base stealers.

Correct! Sheffield had 253 steals to go along with his 509 HRs.

Schmidt had a good amount of steals early in his career, but came up just short at 174.

Dave guessed Sosa but you did not respond. Has to be him, been through the list mentally and unless I'm forgetting someone, none were base stealers.

Pujols? McGriff? Kaline? Just throwing names out there in case Sosa is incorrect

Edited to add: looked it up ... Sosa is correct with 609/234. Pujols had enough HRs but only 117 SB, and my other two guesses weren't even in the ballpark.

OK, of the 28 players with 500 home runs, who had the LEAST stolen bases?

Yes, Slammin' Sammy Sosa is the correct response, as he had 234 steals (but i guess everyone already figured that out).

Good job by all

Is Andrew McCutchen still active? He’s maybe been around long enough.

It must be McGwire then, never saw him run. I didn't guess him at first thinking maybe as a youngster he had stolen a few.

Interesting contrast to Canseco who was a big dude but could really run. Such a waste of talent, although I guess by the numbers you could say he had a pretty good career.

McCutchen has reached a lot of mini milestones: 2000 hits, 1000 RBI, 1000 Runs, 1000 walks, 300 HRs. He is a borderline HOFer for sure.

Was surprised to learn that during Canseco's 40/40 season in '88, he became only the 3rd MLB player to have a 40/20 season, the first 3 being Aaron (twice), Mays, and Yastrzemski.

Canseco is one of 4 players to have three or more 40/20 seasons.
The first player to do so was Barry Bonds, followed by Canseco, ARod (who did it 4x), and most recently Ohtani.

49 WAR at age 38, I dunno.

He has a chance to eke out 50 WAR. Add the MVP and other accolades, he is a borderline guy. May never get in. But who knows?

His first 7 seasons put him on a possible Hall of Fame path, but since 2016, he hasn't been anywhere close to the same player. He's borderline at best, but I wouldn't be surprised if he got less than 5% and fell off the ballot in his first year.

Not exactly the highest bar to clear. Once you start playing the game of if x is in then y should be in, they'll need to double the size of the plaque gallery.

I'd rather figure out a way to remove Baines.

I could be wrong, and I'm just speculating, but maybe Baines was good in that he opened the way for players who historically had been thought not good enough like Hodges, Oliva, Minoso, Allen, Parker.

By the way, why does McCutchen's 2009 card have "RC" on it when he is in Topps and Topps Chrome 2005?

The RC logo from MLB was started in 2006, and part of that was changing the rules so that minor leaguers could only be in minor league sets (like the current Heritage Minors line). Before that a RC on the card was just a thing Topps did itself (ignoring other manufacturers) and there was no 'official' sanctioning or requirement of an MLB game debut. Presumably McCutchen got caught up in this cutoff and change and this one isn't actually an oopsie.

Got it thanks. It looks like similar things with Votto and Verlander, "RC" designations after they appeared in major league sets, in Votto's case many years before. Greinke too maybe? BTW McCuthchen's 2009 Topps may be the worst card ever made.

Only catch is I don't think they're HOF'ers either. Out of that group Allen is the only one I really like and I could live with it if he was the best non-HOF'er.

I have a soft spot for Hodges and if there was some kind of Contributor category that took a man's entire body of work into account I'd put him and Lefty O'Doul in in a heartbeat, but he comes up short for me as just a player. I know Torre got in as a manager and Baker will too, but they'd both be no-brainers in my Contributor category. I think it would seriously help guys like Pinella and Davey Johnson as well.

Having the Contributor category would also make me like guys like Schoendienst being in a lot more than I do. It might also open the doors to guys who weren't particularly close as players or managers yet their overall contribution to the game was massive. Thinking guys like Zimmer, Pesky and Johnny Sain in addition to the previously mentioned O'Doul.

Like it or not the standards have changed and players you and I would have relegated to the hall of very good are now, in fact, good enough.

I don't know. I think a lot of times people get in who aren't good enough, for other reasons.

And people like Allen, who are clearly good enough, don't get in for other reasons.

Every voter has their own standards, and then every voter decides whether to follow those standards when they vote.
