I don't know about ya'll, but since the extraordinary price increases over the last 3 yrs, I have been more lenient on lower conditioned cards.
Five years ago I wouldn't have acquired this (shown before) but now I don't mind it so much!

I always thought with regional dialect that "yawl" or "y'all" as my family in the eastern south tend to use, it was at least logical.
After meeting my now wife's family from the Pittsburgh area, I quite literally had to quietly pull her aside to ask just what on earth her parents meant every time the word "yinz" popped up. (Which is a lot apparently, lol).

I totally agree with you Leon, and Luke. I went into the T206 set with only a few rules. Purchase extremely low population cards at whatever grade came along. Usually they were 1's and 2's which were fine with me, because most others were waiting for better grades which rarely came along. I tried to stay away from major paper loss and heavy writing, but some cards had exceptions. I loved the days of being able to buy Tolstoi's, Cycles, EPDG's, and American Beauty's at $40 each. When counting all my T206's, rare backs, no prints, multiple Cobbs and a bunch of other HOF'ers, my average paid per card is $83. I'd love to add some low grade off backs that I need, for $83 nowadays, even though I'd feel like I was over paying.
I often wonder if there was something else I could have done to advance my collection, without spending more money than I have spent. If I could go back and change anything, I would have focused strickly on T206's, and left all my other hobbies behind.

Does it count that A) I was born and raised in Tennessee and now reside in Florida, B) my oldest sister lived in Dallas for about 5 years, and my first visit there in 1967 started me on my first round of baseball card collecting, and C) she was actually born in Mississippi, while my dad was in the Army before going overseas during WW2?
It's always been "ya'll".

Price escalation caused me to lower my standards, grade wise not eye appeal wise. But the continued price escalation has essentially priced me out completely on cards I want to add. I guess thats why I have turned my attention to other collectibles for the time being.

I guess that was when I was 12 (or was I 11?) ... I recall we lived a couple streets apart and we both played at the time, so its pretty clear we did, though not on the same team. If we did, if was just that one season as I was in Florida till then, and I think you said you left the area shortly after that...

The idea of writing is to communicate thoughts, so as long as I can understand your thoughts from your writing it is perfectly acceptable to me regardless how you spell the words. Houston has, or at least used to have, those Drive Friendly signs. To me, Yall is talking friendly.

The lower-grade part of town is where I live. I don't mind them at all...as long as paper loss or a crease doesn't affect the front too much. Pretty much every one of my T206 HOF Portraits are VG or less.

Abso-frickin-lutely!
Gorgeous card, with an original blank back. Who really cares what's on the back then. If anything, that back-stamp adds some character and intrigue to the card. Who, or what, does that BH stand for? Great card and image for being approximately 135 years old. |

Here's one that somebody may have recorded the date of acquisition on:
Paul A. Hines. Outfielder with the Washington Nationals in 1886-1887. 2,133 hits and 57 home runs in 20 MLB seasons. 1884 World Series champion with the Providence Grays. 1878 Triple Crown winner. 2-time (1878 and 1879) batting champion. 1878 NL home run leader and NL RBI leader. Hines debuted with Washington in the National Association in 1972 and played for eight other MLB teams, including the Washington Blue Legs (1873), Washington Nationals (NL) (1886-1887), and, in his final season, the Washington Statesmen (1891). During the first five NL seasons, from 1876 through 1880, Hines had more base hits than any other player, and he retired third to Cap Anson and Jim O'Rourke with 1,884 career hits in the majors. His total of sixteen seasons as a major league team's primary center fielder was not surpassed until Tris Speaker and Ty Cobb in 1925. https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1663758755 |

If I didnt have lower grade cards, I wouldnt have a collection at all. I would rather have the card in hand than spending large amounts of money to have a pristine example of it. It all started when I found a beat to hell Brett rookie at a mall show in the 80s for $2. I threw the money at the guy and ran out like I had just stole the Mona Lisa. Pretty much the North Star still for how I collect.

yes. in the olden days(pre 2000) I preferred cards with no disfiguring creases in my collection...and trimmed/altered was a no-go.
these days...I've been forced to embrace altered cards as the only responsible way to add cards I want...like this guy! We have seen a major uptick in values/demand for altered/low grade cards as prices on many have skyrocketed out of reach of many. I'm at peace with preferring a reasonably altered card to an ugly card with a #! |

This is a great thread.
I love some of my higher graded cards as they are simply beautiful and you can picture what the cards looked like when they first saw the light. With that said, there is also a beauty to be found with our lower graded cards. These cards are over 100 years old! They shouldn't look like they are fresh from the printer, they should have a story to tell. My lower grade cards have lived a full life. If I ever reach 100 years of age, I will have scars and wrinkles, and they will hopefully have their own, rich story to tell as well.
