If you had a 1000 to blow, err, spend, what would you buy ? a single card, Mantle ? or spread it out ? I'm considering, thanks.

Pre-war hall of famer from an important set: Goudey, T206, Felt Blankets, whatever. Or a Type-1 photo. I would focus on Cobb, Johnson, Mathewson, Speaker, Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Greenberg, Dimaggio. Personally, I collect Pre-war Reds, but with $1000 I would focus on a bigger name player. It's an expensive market, but still plenty of good items to be had for $1000.

The best looking Jackie Robinson card you could find for $1,000. Maybe a low to mid grade ‘54 to ‘56 Topps, or a ‘50 Bowman beater.

A thousand lottery tickets, hoping to win enough to be able to buy a decent card at today's prices.

For Pleasure:
A nice T206 Matty White or Dark cap. I think these cards have a lot of room to grow and are relatively inexpensive considering Matty's status in the hobby. A nice T205 would work too. For Investment: Buy a Koufax rookie. Good chance you'll be able to double your money in short order. If you're a modern guy with outside interests I'd pick up a Lebron rookie now before it becomes the next Jordan rookie. Last edited by packs; 03-24-2021 at 12:58 PM. |

I've been collecting Sherry Magee cards in hope he will have his day of recognition (besides the whole Magie error). You can usually get them for common pricing. Plus he's the only player I've ever heard of that punched and umpire out cold. Only served 36 games.

Of course his given name was Sherwood. I often wondered why he didn't just go by "Woody". Then again....

A $1,000.00, at least card wise, just doesn't buy what it used to just 2 years ago. I remember seeing Hank Aaron and Willie Mays' rookie cards (1s obviously) in this neighborhood just two years ago.

Difficult to get anything good for that price right now.
You want high quality card of a high quality HOFer? Across all the sports I see one that is still an absolute bargain: 1980 Topps Larry Bird PSA 9, the one without Magic on the other side. 9's are going for just over $1,000 right now. The 9's with both of them on there are over $50,000+. A PSA 9 Magic Johnson alone is $4,000+. It doesn't add up. Grab the Bird. Elite HOFer in PSA 9 for that price right now?

This card's main value problem is that Topps apparently triple printed it. Accordingly, the supply is out there. However, how many 7 or 8s are out there?

I mean no offense, and everyone's entitled to their opinion of course, but can you do me a favor and stop the first 500,000 people walking into a baseball stadium this year and ask them if they've ever heard of Sherry Magee? I'm guessing you'd have a hard time finding 5 people who have. And those 5 are likely board members.

I saw a pretty one DavidBVintage had up. I really like raw cards, but was considering the plunge because it was of a player from a defunct team. |

Buy a Bo Jackson 1986 Topps Tiffany card, PSA 9. It's a beloved iconic card with tremendous sentimental appeal among a certain generation collector. One of those "I fell in love with cards because of that card" cards. I think Bo's story and legend will only grow over time. Yes, his career was short and his stats limited, but when people talk about some of the stuff he did in that short time period it's almost Mantle-esque.

That's why I collect them. Borderline HOF player with an interesting story. Often found for $20. Good long term investments for the price, especially if he gets voted in.
That being said, I also got a extensive Bill Donovan and Joe Wood collection, hoping for the same thing. Worse case you get a 100+ year old card that steadily increases in value. Quote:

You could buy a 82 Topps traded Ripken psa 9 and possibly could have a few bucks left to spare. The card is not iconic but the player and his status in the game is eternal.

You could get a nice looking Mantle for $1k. I'd lean towards the nicest 56 topps you could find for 1k. Or a 68 Ryan but just because it's a personal favorite. As others have said you should buy what your personal favorite is especially if this is a major purchase.

You can probably get one of these for around 1000. As classic a baseball card as there is.

I enjoy these posts to see where others would spend their money. For me, I’ve looked at second year cards to continue to grow my collection with skyrocketing prices.
For example, a mid-grade second year Aaron or Clemente would both be under $1000. I don’t feel the Clemente rookie has seen as meteoric a rise as some of the others from the same era, and the 56 is a nice looking card. Also, not his second year, but a nice centered 1971 Nolan Ryan with sharp black borders would still leave you room to buy others. Finally, I look at the Future Hall of Fame Eligibles to see what players are coming down the pike that are likely to get in. Some are obvious (like Jeter and Mariano were). May be able to get their RC’s before they bump (or bump further. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'd go with the 57 Mantle as well. Still affordable in low-mid grade.

High-grade top HOFs in the Ps: P1, P2, PM10, Mrs. Sherlock's, etc. From my observation, the nice ones are getting sucked up into collections quickly, significant price increases bound to follow. I've seen two beautiful WaJo "1924 Pennant Winners" go for just over a grand recently (I sold one of them), and that has to be a good deal any way you cut it. It had been about five years since I had seen one on the market before that. Blankets and felts would be my second choice for a good place to put your thousand today.

If I had a thousand bucks to just blow on sports cards and not worry about loosing the money I think that I would purchase as many raw, high grade looking cards of Soto and Tatis cards to set aside and wait.(after getting the graded) Maybe in five years they appreciate at or close to the Trout cards so I dump them then and hopefully I've made enough to purchase a nice Cobb card.

A high grade 51 or 52 Berk Ross Joe Dimaggio can still be had for under $1000. That's a deal considering that the Mantle and Jackie Robinson Berk Ross cards go for a lot more and there are so few options for "affordable" Dimaggios.
