I love the other thread going on about the Cincinnati Reds. Awesome items. But I wanted to get a thread started that looked more specifically at a small window of time and players: '39 and '40 when the Reds went to back-to-back world series against the Yankees and Tigers. You can post items for any player or manager associated. For instance, you might have items for Hank Gowdy before or beyond these years.
I try to focus my collection on this era, especially on flat items, because I don't have a lot of space to hold and display my items. So many of them go into a scrap book. So, to kick it off, I wanted to share the Reds version of the World Series programs. I do not own the Yankees or Tigers home programs. I think both programs are beautiful, patriotic, and well done. I especially love the incorporation of the '39 season theme recognizing 100 years of baseball, and the opening of the Hall of Fame. If someone has the Yankees or Tigers versions, I'd love if you posted them. The Yankees '39 cover is also a beautiful cover. ![]() ![]() Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk

The next item I have is a 1940 regular season program, but it's scored for Game 4 of the World Series. That would lead me to believe it was scored over the radio. Regardless, Derringer and the Reds won that game!

I only have one World Series ticket, game 4 of the 1940 series. I specifically bought this to go along with my game 4 scored program. One day I will focus on completing the set!
If anyone else has the other tickets, or any special regular season tickets, show 'em! ![]() Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk

Sticking with the World Series, I have picked up a couple news service photos. The first is from the '39 series, Joltin' Joe sliding safely into third. The next is from the '40 series, Bucky Walters being congratulated after hitting a home run.

During this era, Baseball Magazine loved the Reds. There are a couple other covers I don't have yet, one has Ernie Lombardi on the cover, Bucky Walters is on a cover in 1941, and I believe there is one more with a Reds player on the cover. The first is Bucky Walters and Joe D., and the second is the '40 World Champion Reds.

Another awesome sidetrack of collecting for this era is Louisville Slugger advertisements. Ernie Lombardi was the 1938 NL MVP, as well as the NL Batting Champ. He was displayed prominently on the ads at this time, as well as on the cover of The Famous Sluggers Yearbook.

Ernie Lombardi's prowess also landed him on numerous Wheaties backs. I'm missing two more of his. I also know Bucky Walters and Paul Derringer appear on some backs, and I'm missing those as well. If you have them, show 'em!

This era of Reds also saw numerous sets released. My favorite, that I'm collecting, is the W-711 set (1938 & 39, color). The set is small, think slightly larger than t206. However, there is also the Orcajo postcard set, same poses used in other sets, but black and white. There is also the 1940 Harry Hartmann set (b&w). There are also team released 5x7 pictures floating around.
If you have any of the sets other than the W-711, or W-711 that I'm missing, show 'em! ![]() Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk

I've also tried to track down signatures on 3x5 index cards. I really like the idea of making my scrap book look like it came out of the period, so using index cards is a simple way for me to build in that unique look. Below there is Warren Giles, Bill McKechnie, and Hank Gowdy.

Hi Tim,
Tim N. here - the 1939-40 Reds were my entree into prewar card collecting - I had an uncle near Cincy who gave me his W711s and his scorecards when I was about twelve. I don't have anything like your memorabilia, but I have a few things I will try to post when I can get them scanned. You're welcome to email me directly at apspr@msn.com, since you and i may be the main board people interested in this team, LOL. In the meantime, here's one of my card White Whales that I looked for for decades and finally got a few years ago. |

Tim, it's nice to see what a Wes Livengood card looks like. I was wondering if it was just a rumor — I tried to find an image on Google just the other day and came up empty. If I had a time machine, my first stop would be Crosley Field in 1940. Here are a few cards and snapshots from that era in Cincinnati ...

In the last 12 months I've picked up two Type 2 photos. One auto'd by Bucky Walters, standing with Foxx, Joe Gordon, Lefty Gomez, and Ival Goodman. I believe it is from the '39 All Star Game, as you can see the centennial patch on Walters sleeve. The next picture I just bought is a publicity photo for the '39 World Series with Joltin' Joe and auto'd by Ernie "The Schnozz" Lombardi. Very excited about both.

Hi guys,
The people following this thread are the ones who can answer this: The Orcajo checklist has two Whitey Moore listings, one with the correct photo and one with Bucky Walters' image. But one is much more common than the other, and I have seen contradictory listings about which one is which. My sense from looking at the faces is that the Orcajo "Moore" pictured here is Walters, not the real Moore. Is that the way you see it? Last edited by timn1; 05-26-2020 at 10:38 AM. |

Agreed, it's difficult. I have spent quite a while looking at their faces on google images. The Orcajo doesn't have Bucky's usual expression, but it does seem to feature a rather rounded face and a slight ballooning of the cheeks which are definitely like Walters, as opposed to the slightly hollow cheeks and leaner face seen in most Moore photos. That's my main conclusion-

Those old school publicity photos are the best. Nothing like today. Can you imagine Mike Trout being told to throw the ball in the air as high as he can and try to catch it as photos are being taken? And that old school windup. Love it. My son cracks up when I throw it like that in the backyard. I love pre-war sets, they have some great shots.

I bought it from Mike Gidwitz about 10 years ago. I'd been constantly upgrading a high grade set for a few years before that and hit a wall, this seemed like the logical companion piece. My stepfather grew up in Cincinnati and went to the '39 and '40 World Series, I got this sheet and a couple of ticket stubs from the series as dementia was starting to set in on him, but he loved holding them and talking about the players back then.

[QUOTE=todeen;1983321]Sticking with the World Series, I have picked up a couple news service photos. The first is from the '39 series, Joltin' Joe sliding safely into third. The next is from the '40 series, Bucky Walters being congratulated after hitting a home run.
Just an FYI, the players congratulating Walters are Lew Riggs (center) and Morrie Arnovich (right). Behind Riggs it is probably Eddie Joost. |
