This little guy played "small-ball".....but, was a Manager with "big-ball" visions. Huggins had a keen insight for talent. In 1919, he persuaded Col. Jacob
Ruppert (NY Yankees owner) to acquire Babe Ruth. Huggins had the foresight that Ruth's power game would dramatically revolutionize Baseball. Babe Ruth's free spirit clashed with Huggins' conservative style of playing the game. However, Huggins (more or less) gave Ruth free reign. Until 1925. The 1925 season was Ruth's worst, he was really out of shape (weighed 245 lbs). Huggins read him the riot act ("shape up, or ship out"). During the Winter of '25, Ruth joined a Fitness Club in NYC. By the Spring of 1926, Ruth had trimmed down to 205 lbs. and was in great physical shape. It was a regiment which Ruth stuck to for the rest of his career; and, it paid off. If you track Ruth's performance from 1926 to 1933, it exceeds his per- formance during his younger years (1919 - 1925). And, Miller Huggins deserves a lot of credit for this. Ruth and Huggins....perfect together. So, show off some of your Miller Huggins items. I will start this show with these cards...... ![]() . ![]() And, here's my T205 Huggins A=B=C=D connection (any help finding his DRUM card will be greatly appreciated). . ![]() ![]() TED Z . |

Thanks for sharing Ted, I wasn't aware of the influence that Huggins had on Ruth. I can add a Huggins F Stamp.

I'm responding to an email I received regarding Babe Ruth's fitness program. There are too many stories about the Babe not taking care of his physique.
This is not really true. In 1925 Ruth was out of shape, his weight peaked up to 245 lbs, and his "less than Ruthian" performance that year reflected this. The Yankees fell to 7th place in 1925; and, Miller Huggins had run out of patience with Ruth. Huggins disciplined Ruth and advised him to "shape up". The Babe was determined to get back into shape. During the Winter of 1925 he started a rigorous physical training regime at a New York City gym. And, every Winter there-after, Ruth continued this fitness program. By the start of the 1926 season, Ruth's weight was down to 205 lbs. In the 1926 season, his fitness program started paying dividends. ![]() TED Z . |

In 1923, a 19-year old rookie 1st baseman joined the Yankees. Miller Huggins devoted a lot of time in developing Lou Gehrig into the player he became.
Years later Lou Gehrig said....“He’s the most patient manager I ever knew. He stuck with me and encouraged me and helped me. He is the best teacher I ever had the privilege of being with.” Miller Huggins died Sept 25, 1929...... Lou Gehrig told reporters, “I will miss him more than anyone. Next to my father and my mother, he was the best friend a boy could have. He taught me everything I know.” TED Z . Last edited by tedzan; 01-04-2017 at 05:35 AM. Reason: Correct typo. |

Great stuff everyone!

1923 was a great year for Miller Huggins and the Yankees. It was their 1st season playing in Yankee Stadium and the Yankees won their first World Championship.
The Scorecard in my World Series program is scored (4th game which was at the Polo Grounds). Yankees won it 8-4. In the 6-game Series, Babe Ruth batted .368 with 8 RBI's and 3 HR's. ![]() ![]() TED Z . |

Baseball in the 20th Century was blessed with a tremendous number of super-stars (hitters and pitchers). But, I think an important factor which set
the Yankees apart from all the other great teams is the superior leadership of their Managers......Miller Huggins, Joe McCarthy, and Casey Stengel. Shown here is the very rare 1910 COUPON card of Miller Huggins (this is the only one graded by PSA)...... ![]() ![]() Hey guys....let's see some more Miller Huggins' "oldies, but goodies" displayed here ? And, you are correct regarding a T205 Huggins DRUM. According to my A = B = C = D pattern, there should be 32 subjects in the T205 set printed with DRUM backs. But to date, just 27 have been confirmed. Here is the T205 DRUM checklist...... James Austin John Bates Beals Becker George Bell William Bergen Russell Blackburne Albert Bridwell Mordecai Brown Harold Chase (border on shirt) Frank Corridon Thomas Downey Louis Evans George Graham (blue signature) Buck Herzog Richard Hoblitzell Miller Huggins Jack Knight A. Latham Thomas Leach John Lobert Briscoe Lord Patrick Moran Frederick Olmstead George Paskert Fred Payne Edward Phelps John Quinn Lewis Richie David Shean George Stone Zach Wheat Harry Wolter The above 5 names in bold have yet to be confirmed with a DRUM back. However, they have been confirmed with the A - B - C pattern. Therefore, I expect these 5 subjects will eventually be discovered with the DRUM back. TED Z . |
