Been grabbing shots of musicians I grew up listening to (my parents' music). Didn't get any Elvis this time -- won a bunch in past auctions -- but love these old publicity stills. Two incredible harmonizing duos.

My favorite band Rush and the Apollo 11 Crew. Now I have to work on their sigs to frame all together

Now I know who got the Marilyns and the Tippi Hedren. Congrats, guys, nice photos.

All the rock stuff went for more than I expected. I was actually wondering whether the opens were too high on them. There's just so much reprinted stuff out there that when there is good news archive data on the backs they seem to bring a premium.

yeah, there was just a lot of good entertainment stuff this time, too many to bid on.
I wanted the Supremes, Dylan, Sex Pistols, and Doors photos but got shut out on all of them. Loved that Sex Pistols photo, oh, and the Salvador Dali, which was too cool. I did snag the Lennon and Ono though, and my all-time favorite blonde. Right up there with a Ruth photo (uh-oh, heresy!). |

Thank you for this thread! You guys are going think "duh!"but I never knew about RMY. I guess I had seen their advertisements on the Net 54 banner but never thought much of it. This is the kind of stuff I really like! You all made some beautiful selections! I have been trapped in the idea that a picture had to be autographed to be pricey or valuable or something to spend money on. I can see now that isn't the case. Like I said, you all can say "duh!" I love learning new things! How often does RMY put on an auction? Are there other such reputable auction houses focusing on photographic images like these? Thanks.

RMY runs auction pretty much monthly. About 3-4x a year Rhys runs a "Premier" auction. The one that just ended was a Premier. The regular monthlies end at midnight and the premier's end at 2am.
Great selection, quality, and customer service. Some awesome stuff.

There are excellent offerings every month, but Rhys does save some of the really higher end photos for the premier. The monthlys are also smaller. They have about 350 lots vs 1200 for the Premier.

I will certainly be registering with them and getting my feet wet in July's auction. I have been scrolling through some of the photos that sold in the Premier auction. There were some striking photos! This has opened up a whole new world to me as a collector. Much more exciting to me than simply cards alone. This is right up my alley! I love the visuals and the story that each photo tells.
You guys who buy photos in the RMY auctions, do you frame and display everything you buy or do some pictures find there way into photo albums of sorts with PVC- and acid-free sleeves? Thanks for any input. |

Robert,
That is a loaded question, though not in a bad way. In previous discussion, we have found that people house their photos in many many different ways, including Mylar sleeves, photographic folio books, framed, and others I am sure to have missed. I don't know there is a perfect way, but Dr Cycleback(DRCY) will likely be able to answer that question better than I.

I use these. I buy them at comic book stores for around $15 -$20 per 100 depending on size. I use Golden Age comic size for bigger photos and Silver age comic size for smaller ones. Crystal clear and pretty strong.

Once again, thanks for the feedback. I keep signed photos in a binder. To try and protect the signatures, I store the binders upright. I guess there wouldn't be a need to do that with these photos in mylar sleeves? Do you all store your binders upright or lying down?

I use clamshell binders by Unikeep that stand square and are designed to be upright and they have a very small ring profile with square rings, so they fit tighter on a shelf if your space is limited, which is my situation. They are 1.5" thick, 100% polyethelyne [no metal to rust or bend, and no acidic cardboard] and the profile is just barely more than that.

Adam, those look like sweet binders. Not too pricey either.
Mark, about the mylar sleeves you showed me earlier, do they make those with holes to clip into a binder? Does Ultra Pro make a mylar page for this purpose, with the holes to clip into a binder? The ones I have seen them sell are made of propylene. This seems ok, but not as good as mylar. |

Robert,
I am not sure if they come with holes for binders. I have not seen them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do. Ben showed me these binders that he uses and I now use as well. For many photos, I'll put them in Mylars and then in the album

I have not seen Mylar pages with holes for binders, but you might just need to do a search.

After doing quite a bit of searching, I would say you are correct. I can’t find any of them with holes for binders. It want to use those Ultra Pro PVC- and acid-free sleeves I have that are hole punched for binders, but I am afraid not to use mylar. I guess I will need to buy some type of archival safe portfolio or art box to put the photos in once I have them in the mylar sleeves. Thanks for all of your help and advice.

Specifically, wouldn't these work? :
"No PVC, Acid Free - Just like the Ultra Pro Card Sleeves, there is no PVC used in the card pages. The archival quality pages are also acid free. UV Protection - Given the fact that these pages reside in a binder, UV protection may not seem as necessary for card pages. However, binder do not seal the card pages in and they are still exposed to light. And there are always instances where you have run out of binder space and the card-filled pages sit in stacks, waiting for a home. Since it comes standard, UV protection is a nice added benefit. Plus, collectors can feel a little better about accidentally leaving a binder open for an extended period while searching for a particular card." Ultra Pro is just dandy for run of the mill items. They are made from polyethylene, which is much better than vinyl, bit not considered archival despite the ads. Mylar [polyester] is really the gold standard. It is considered inert and is recommended by the Library of Congress. I switched most of my really good items to mylar holders recently, the things I want to keep as long as I collect. Cost me about $500 in materials.
