If you could go back in time and see any World Series, meaning the entire Series not just one game, I'd have to say the 1926 WS would be right up there. The '26 Yankees lineup was basically a mirror of what is considered to be the greatest team of all time, the 1927 Yankees.
This would be the the 1st time the Cardinals and Yankees, which time has proven are the 2 best teams, with the most WS wins, in their respective leagues, would meet and square off. In 1926 Grover Cleveland Alexander is a 39 year old WWI veteran hard drinking insubordinate who Cubs manager Joe McCarthy sells outright to the Cardinals midway through the '26 season just to get him off his team and to not have to deal with him anymore. But in the '26 Series the grizzled veteran shines. 2 complete game victories (Game 2 & 6) and the biggest Game 7 Save in WS history. The Series and his life are shown in a somewhat cheesy, but decent movie with the star of the movie being played by Ronald Reagan, with a good portion of the movie focusing in on the WS and specifically Games 6 & 7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3QAnVF70Gs Player Manager Rogers Hornsby calls on Alex to mow down the Yankees Murderer's Row in Yankee Stadium down 3 games to 2 in Game 6 to force the drama of Game 7. Even Madison Bumgarner had 3 days rest before his relief appearance in his Game 7, Alexandar had less than 24 hours after his complete game victory in GAME 6 to tie the Series at 3-3. So Alex is called on in the bottom of the 7th to come in relief, after a reported drinking binge celebration after his big Game 6 complete game, and strikes out Lazzeri with the bases loaded! Then retires 5 in a row to get to 2 outs in the 9th and who is coming to the plate.....Babe Ruth....(you can't write this)..a hungover Alex needs one out to bring the Cardinals their 1st WS, and Ruth is the tying run coming to the plate. Ruth who a few days earlier hit 3 home runs in a game for lil Johnny Sylvester or so the lore goes, has 1 home run and 3 walks in this game. Hornsby heads to the mound to talk to Alex. Alex wants to pitch to Ruth, but walks him on a 3-2 count. With Meusel up, Ruth then attempts to steal 2nd base to get into scoring position but gets thrown out to end the game. Series over! What a Series! And a supposed drunken washed up hero did it all with incredible pitching performances in Game 2, 6 and 7 against perhaps the greatest lineup in baseball history. Presented here is a Ticket from Game 6. Only 10 of these on the PSA pop report, the least amount of any game from that series. Guess the Yankee fans were not happy with the outcome and ripped them up courtesy of Alexander's dominant performance. Some glue residue stained the back from being in a scrapbook at one time, but back is smooth to the touch, just displays amazingly! Very good condition overall. Get it for over half off of one that is currently up on Ebay ($1250) http://www.ebay.com/itm/191556948444...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Last edited by Shoeless Moe; 04-27-2015 at 07:46 AM. |
