First ever T206

I am new to here and the other day I sent out a few inquirers about fair price for T206 cards.... well I got my first one in the mail today and could not have been more excited to get a baseball card or anything else for that matter in the mail. Here is my new to me $9.45 LUMLEY!!

Here's my first T206. Still have it. Purchased for $350 during the summer of 1997. A friend's cousin was selling his grandfather's tobacco card collection to get some cash for a visit to Vegas. I'm pretty sure I got the better deal...

. sorry i dont know where the not out of a pack came from. first t206 Street Portrait in rather nice shape. bought it at a small lancaster show around 1981 (9 years old). Long since gone, I do have my first ever vintage card purchase though. A 1951 topps Gl Hodges in VG condition i think i paid around a dime for it from Vince at Renningers in 1979.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I can't wait to get my next cards now :-) . I also ordered "The T206 Collection" book to read up on the players and learn their histories as I get the cards.

I'll probably wait a bit on the Christy Matthewsons , but those are some beautiful cards!

LOL Tom! I actually thought maybe I shouldn't be starting down this road once I started calculating what this may cost. But then I convinced myself its not like I'm buying something that loses its value so I talked myself into moving forward. Hopefully I wont regret it later

I was at a Holiday Inn show back around 1986, so I was fourteen or so when this happened. I remember a table that had a big bin of cards advertised for $1 each. I had one dollar left in my wallet. Was able to pick up a Charley O'Leary - portrait for a buck. I was THRILLED to own a t206. I got back in the hobby back in 1999, but didn't get into the t206's until 2007. Although my collection only consists of Red Sox and White Sox, I still have that O'Leary card. I love that card.

are doing great! you won't regret it......they are fun, and do retain their value unlike other issues cause the set is one of the most popular ever, and is driven by the holy grail of baseball cards, the T206 Wagner......just don't spend your lunch money on them like me

true story- I had a choice to get a cap(tooth rear molar), or a T206 Meyers scrap....what do you think I picked??

I got my first T206 about this same time last year.



As much as I love that card still, I didn't really "get it" until I held my first unslabbed T206 in my hands. Mr. Claude Rossman, teammate of Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford.



There was something about holding this little piece of cardboard in my hands. I felt it, smelled it, looked at the various creases, and notches, and wondered where it was in the world when they happened.

These are little pieces of history. You never know who may have owned them before they arrived at your doorstep.

I was going to ask that question Bill.... what does everyone prefer, the slabbed cards or the raw cards that you can feel? Some of the same wonderment rushed though my head when I held the raw LUMLEY. Where had this little creased card traveled these last 100 years. Who was the first owner...
I have ordered a few slabbed cards and a couple more raw ones so I'll know this week which I like best but would love to hear others opinions.

I bought my first two T206s back in the early 1990's and still have them today - and I'll never get rid of them. It wasn't until 17 years later that I started collecting the T206 set.

Welcome to the madness . You DO have a support group here.. We look out and help each other a lot...and we also compete for our little gems.. And along the way, if you do it long enough and want to, you will meet a ton of great guys and make a lot of friends. It's all up to you in how much of anything you want. If I can ever help you can just ask or PM me. However, I am not a focused T206 guy, the other guys are much better for that. I only have a few of them and don't collect sets. Your first pick up is a nice one.

I'm heading to TN for vacation at the end of the month. That gives him about 2 weeks to gather up some duplicates to trade.

Thanks Leon... As i get more comfortable and learn more I am sure I will reach out to the group. Not more than a month ago I knew almost nothing about T206 but with the information I've gathered on here has been invaluable.

Donnie, I think it really depends on the individual collector. Some people want to be able to hold their cards--all of them--or put them in neat little stacks. Some want all their cards graded by the same company for uniformity of presentation. I guess my answer would be that you'll find out what you prefer as you go. Remember, any card you get you can always sell. You might change your mind on how you want to collect the set after you've been doing it a while. I started out wanting to do the entire set in a SGC 40, as I'd seen a few other forum members doing it. But I discovered I like my cards to be a little cleaner. Instead of a SGC 40, which equates to a PSA 3, I am working on getting PSA 4 or 5, or their SGC equivalent. Now, it will take me longer to finish the set because the card cost will obviously go up substantially, but hey, I'm in no rush to finish. The chase is as much fun as getting the cards.

I love being able to hold these cards. There's nothing like feeling a 100 year old card. The texture of the card as it has evolved over the century since it came off the press. The little wrinkles, corner wear, the little dings in the edges. They all tell a story. It's only somewhat recently that people have started obsessing over card condition (I guess you could say the hobby started becoming more condition-centric with the introduction of PSA and ASA). But while I love holding the cards, there's not a chance I'm going to hold an $800-1,000 card in my bare hands. One of my more expensive cards is a modern one, a 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout base auto. I've scanned it a few times in the last month, and even ungraded it's been going for $800 +. Graded 9.5 it's been at $1,200. I get super nervous whenever it's out of its one touch magnet case. And if my Walter Johnson T206 (my first really valuable pre-ward card) were not slabbed, I'd be a nervous wreck handling it. So having it slabbed is the way to go. And now that I have my safe deposit box, that's where it will be going.

You can sit down and plan out how you're going to put together your collection, but don't be surprised if your plan changes once you've started getting some cards in. That's a good thing! Don't be worried about that. Some things you just can't know about until you've actually done it. If you ever do decide to do somewhat of an about face, go for it. And if you have questions, or just want some feedback, ask us!

Remember, even the most seasoned card collector on this forum, whomever that might be...they were in the same position you are now once.

Have fun, learn as much as you can about the set you're collecting (heck, learn about all the pre-war releases if you want to have a diverse collection). There are no rules. Your collection will be unique. And I for one look forward to seeing your collection grow!

How did your father define the "entire set" ? Did he actually have a Wagner? Just curious.

He actually had three Wagners, though not all at the same time. My father was also involved with setting up various other collectors with their own T206 Wagner cards. This was all in the late 60's to mid 80's.

Only card in the set that he didn't have was the Doyle variation, as it was discovered after his entire collection had been sold.

Not only that (and I know it sounds far fetched) but he purchased his first Wagner for 20 cents. There's an article out there somewhere from the 70's where he mentions it. Will see if I can track it down.
