Is it pronounced Sweet "Cuh-POOR-al" or Sweet "CAP-ur-al"? Just curious.

I used to say Cuh-POOR-al until I heard CAP-ur-al. When I heard CAP-ur-al, I felt like an idiot, thinking I had it wrong for years.
![]() I tend to hear CAP-ur-al more often.

I had only ever heard it as CAP-ur-al until last week. I'm assuming I'm right.

Funny thread. Actually I had it wrong twice!
![]() About two weeks after I began collecting T206's I was online showing my wife some cards that were for sale on Ebay. When I showed her a SC I said to her, "These are Sweet CORPORAL'S, they're one of the more common back ad's". She replied, "That doesn't say Corporal you idiot". ![]() Also, I thought it was Cuh-POOR-al until I read this thread. ![]() While we're at it, is it "You-Zit", or Ooze-Zit? ![]() |

I say Sweet cah- por- 'OWL.
Reminds me of Mel Brooks calling Count de Monet, "Count the Money" in History of the World Part I. When will the sequel be released?

I don't think anyone can be completely wrong in this thread. I mean, we live in a country where Nomar Garciaparra was "No-mahhh Gah-see-up-pahahhhh" to his hometown fans.. and I'm not about to challenge any of the Fenway faithful on that one.

I too wanted that sequel, but aside from "Jews in Space", don't think any of those others could carry a movie.. "Hitler on Ice" would've gotten pretty old after 2 minutes. |

"Gooooo-dee..... gooo-dee... goo-dee.. goo-dee!!" (said in same cadence as Animal House toga chant). I guess us San Franciscans think alike. I now feel empowered to bring goo-dee back into my life.

I have French Louisiana relatives who would say that it is pronounced goo-'DAY, but I'm not about to walk up to a dealer table in TX and pronounce it like that. The price would go up 4 fold. In TX they call them Gowdys like Howdy.

Being born and raised Catholic I was taught in school the miracle of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. A rather significant miracle and rock solid in the Top Ten of Catholic miracles. Shift forward twenty years and I have become card collector, pre-ebay, pre Net54, pre just about everything except Lipsets Vols 1-3, Larry Fritch, and card shows. So while at my first card show I approach a dealer table and ask if he has any Fatima's. I pronounce it the way I was taught in Catholic School...FAT-eh-ma. He quickly corrected me that it was pronounced Fa-TEEM-ah. Being a card show newbie I was a bit embarrassed.
I pronounced Contentnea wrong for many years as well. I am not really sure how to correctly pronounce Breisch (Williams), or Yuenglings. Last edited by MMarvelli; 05-17-2013 at 03:22 PM. |

I've always pronounced it CAP-or-al.
As justification, I go back to the opening scene of Pride of the Yankees, where the young Lou Gehrig tries to get into the baseball game by trading a bunch of "Sweet CAP-or-al" cards to the other kids. Steve |

caporal [ˌkæpəˈrɑːl]
n a strong coarse dark tobacco [from French tabac du caporal corporal's tobacco, denoting its superiority to tabac du soldat soldier's tobacco] It's possible that the French term "caporal" originally derived from "corporeal" which means "bodily" as in, the French generals smoked full-bodied tobacco. ---- As for Nap Lajoie, his surname is derived of two words, "La" and "Joie" - in English, "The Joy". Joie in french is pronounced "shwah" (it is had to write since we don't use that sound in English, but you could listen to it off of GoogleTranslate on your Android. |

Go back to Post #1 and read carefully. No one has addressed the pronunciation of Sweet.
The first "e" is long and the second "e" is long. For emphasis additional long "e"s may be added. It should not be confused with sweat, which is salty. All together now "Sweeeeeeeeeeeet" Class dismissed The 'marm

I'll never forget going to this old guys table as a beginning collector. I asked to see the Nap La-JOY. He looked at me like I had two heads. Rubbed his chin and thought very deeply. Finally with utmost disdain he said "Do you perhaps mean Nop-oh-le-ahhhhh Lah-zho-way?" I was mortified.
