Picked up an old judge Hamilton, but REALLY wanted the Wm. Paterson Travis Jackson. Don't see those around too often ( Esp. in a PSA 7 holder). Maybe next time

A little OT - but did anyone watch the Red Grange assorted lot that fetched 14K (I believe)? That was impressive.
There were a lot of cards I was interested in - but unfortunately I couldn't afford to go after everything with reckless abandon. I did manage to grab these two though... ![]() I overpaid for this, but I collect the set - and this is the nicest example I've seen. ![]()

I fell asleep at the wheel - I wanted the ’47 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson PSA 6... it went for a little less than I thought it would too... I get all these damn AHs confused, and figured it would go into OT for at least 15 minutes.
Ah well.

I'm an amalgam of above posts. Really wanted a Wm. Paterson but fell asleep. Also got confused and assumed the entire auction would stay open until no more bids. Nice pickups, Will.

Sorry I bid you up on that Rogers Peet Ruth, Jeff. I was the underbidder. I need that card too, and that one is a great example. That's a beautiful card, however. I believe the best example known.
I came out of Legendary with nothing. I also wanted the IFS Blue and Orange Ruth that was on an uncut sheet with the Boxers lot, but got outgunned on that one. Oh well. |

I hesitate to comment on items while the auction is still live, but I'll do so now. I see a problem with the Walter Johnson Conlon glass negative. The negative is clearly cropped on the right side, compared to the print, and represents the publication cover, meaning that the negative was created from a print. You would have to be blind to miss it, but it should have been disclosed.
Given the price it went for, I'm thinking a couple of people thought it was an original Conlon glass negative: http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...ntoryid=151896

True, the negative is from later on.
But $200 for the entire lot isn't unreasonable, as the photograph is nice and does match interestingly with negative. Last edited by drc; 11-29-2012 at 10:41 PM. |

Okay, $500 is up there.
Many of the 8x10 negatives with the faux signatures like that were made around the 1950s. Sold via magazine ads. Last edited by drc; 11-29-2012 at 11:13 PM. |

I do think it's interesting that the three images match up like that. That's unusual. As it is, it's an interesting matching trio, except, as Scott noted, the negative was misdescribed.

Picked up "A Fan's Collection of 1950s Signed (23) and Unsigned (24) Photos and Miscellaneous Items"; I just love those oddball and team issue PCs

Oddly, the print I won was NOT described as a Conlon, but definitely is. John Roger's website https://www.theconloncollection.com/ is a great place to look and see if your photo is a Conlon - of course, not finding it there doesn't rule things out.

I am super-thrilled to have won this. All eight players are depicted on 'NY Natl' T206 cards (Devore, Doyle, Snodgrass, Murray, Merkle, Herzog, Meyers and Fletcher), so I will be creating a display. Might have to somehow incorporate Matty and McGraw as well:

Gary, that CDV is breathtaking......it really stood out as a museum style archival piece in the auction!
Thanks OldJudge, now I need to decide how much light of day it will get ![]() I desperately want it on display with my other cards, but equally don't want to see that wonderful image fade in a matter of years. Can any collectors of Old Judges give me their experience of having these photo-style cards out for viewing in non-direct room lighting? Can anyone put a time line for degradation of the image or is the fadeout overstated? |

Scott- I date the CdV based on the revenue stamp on the back. I believe they were only used in the 1864-1866 period for photographs. In Legendary's description, they refer to the reverse saying Hoboken NJ. The NJ does look like 69 in the scan. I'll get a better look when I get the CdV.
68 Hawk- Thanks! And I have to agree with Jay. Your Harry Wright is sharp. Last edited by GaryPassamonte; 12-01-2012 at 04:00 AM. |

This lot should actually date from 1879 through the early 1880s. Current thinking is that the cards that are uncoated are from 1879-1880 and the coated cards from 1881 through the early 1880s. The exciting part of the lot is that it contains the first (by far) individual card of a black athlete, Hart a pedestrian. This set is the first tobacco insert sports set. I was wondering about pedestrians as athletes, and found this interesting article about Ed Weston. His card was part of that set from 1880.
