Legendary Winners - Part I

Anyone pick up anything good last night? My only interest was the 1882 Providence cabinet but of course couldn't afford it.

h2oya311 11-29-2012 08:43 AM

Picked up an old judge Hamilton, but REALLY wanted the Wm. Paterson Travis Jackson. Don't see those around too often ( Esp. in a PSA 7 holder). Maybe next time ;)

big80s 11-29-2012 08:48 AM

Sorry for the giant scans

A little OT - but did anyone watch the Red Grange assorted lot that fetched 14K (I believe)? That was impressive.

There were a lot of cards I was interested in - but unfortunately I couldn't afford to go after everything with reckless abandon. I did manage to grab these two though...

http://packgeek.files.wordpress.com/...bb_sgc4_1.jpeg

I overpaid for this, but I collect the set - and this is the nicest example I've seen.

CharleyBrown 11-29-2012 08:57 AM

I fell asleep at the wheel - I wanted the ’47 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson PSA 6... it went for a little less than I thought it would too... I get all these damn AHs confused, and figured it would go into OT for at least 15 minutes.

Ah well.

I'm an amalgam of above posts. Really wanted a Wm. Paterson but fell asleep. Also got confused and assumed the entire auction would stay open until no more bids. Nice pickups, Will.

gnaz01 11-29-2012 09:11 AM

I was the underbidder on the Honus Wagner cigar band :(

i'm happy that I won the Dick Perez painting of Clark Griffith.
The portrait of the aging legend with the interesting attire of the period
captured me weeks ago.
all the best,

Nice Pattersons and that Ruth Rogers Peet is sweet!

glchen 11-29-2012 10:03 AM

Sorry I bid you up on that Rogers Peet Ruth, Jeff. I was the underbidder. I need that card too, and that one is a great example. That's a beautiful card, however. I believe the best example known.

I came out of Legendary with nothing. I also wanted the IFS Blue and Orange Ruth that was on an uncut sheet with the Boxers lot, but got outgunned on that one. Oh well.

Lot 410

If the winner of lot 410 (William Paterson group of 13) is interested in breaking them up, please contact me - I would be interested in the Marquard.

Thanks

Chris

Thanks a lot, Gary! You cost my family several Christmas gifts with your reckless bidding :) But seriously - I probably overpaid on it at that price - but the fact of the matter is, my max bid was still a ways off. As you know (since you're also looking for one), they're really tough to find even remotely centered. I'm not sure why that card has such brutal centering, but it typically does from what I've seen. If I'm going to be bid-up, at least it was by a friendly fellow board member.

My two from last night. Plan on a few more pickups tonight, and then SCP . . . Jesus is it auction season again?

Same here. Would like to acquire one as a type card. Thanks

Legendary auction start ending soon....get your butts in chat and let's see you sweat it out.

yomass 11-29-2012 09:01 PM

Wm. Paterson common lots 410 and 411

If the winner of these lots wants to break them, I need Scott, Shawkey and Marquard.

Runscott 11-29-2012 10:19 PM

I hesitate to comment on items while the auction is still live, but I'll do so now. I see a problem with the Walter Johnson Conlon glass negative. The negative is clearly cropped on the right side, compared to the print, and represents the publication cover, meaning that the negative was created from a print. You would have to be blind to miss it, but it should have been disclosed.

Given the price it went for, I'm thinking a couple of people thought it was an original Conlon glass negative: http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...ntoryid=151896

drc 11-29-2012 10:40 PM

True, the negative is from later on.

But $200 for the entire lot isn't unreasonable, as the photograph is nice and does match interestingly with negative.

It went for 500, that was just the min. bid.

And a few more from tonight. Sort of wish I had a bit more focus, but the shotgun approach seems to be working for the time being . . .

drc 11-29-2012 11:09 PM

Okay, $500 is up there.

Many of the 8x10 negatives with the faux signatures like that were made around the 1950s. Sold via magazine ads.

I just realized it's not glass - doh.

drc 11-29-2012 11:20 PM

I do think it's interesting that the three images match up like that. That's unusual. As it is, it's an interesting matching trio, except, as Scott noted, the negative was misdescribed.

Exhibitman 11-30-2012 07:41 AM

Picked up "A Fan's Collection of 1950s Signed (23) and Unsigned (24) Photos and Miscellaneous Items"; I just love those oddball and team issue PCs

Obviously all three items' images can trace their lineage back to the same original Conlon negative (print-more image on right,negative-more image on left), but this negative was made from a print, and was then used to create the image on the publication (or doubtfully, vice-versa). So the print they auctioned off is actually a cousin of the other two. When I was researching the Johnson print I won last night, I also researched this one, and while I also think it's a Conlon, I couldn't find any reference tying them together.

Oddly, the print I won was NOT described as a Conlon, but definitely is. John Roger's website https://www.theconloncollection.com/ is a great place to look and see if your photo is a Conlon - of course, not finding it there doesn't rule things out.

Runscott 11-30-2012 09:42 AM

1912 photo of New York Giants

I am super-thrilled to have won this. All eight players are depicted on 'NY Natl' T206 cards (Devore, Doyle, Snodgrass, Murray, Merkle, Herzog, Meyers and Fletcher), so I will be creating a display. Might have to somehow incorporate Matty and McGraw as well:

In more than 20 years of collecting baseball CdVs, I have seen only 2 other "in action" images. This is the third. It dates from 1864-1866 and I'm very happy to have it.

68Hawk--great Harry Wright card--congratulations! That has to be one of the best Wrights in the hobby.

Hi Gary, I figured you picked that up. I was curious that the 'Hoboken' reference on the back was legit, but they ignored the '69. Still, I was inclined to go with earlier dates as well.

Very nice pick-up and it belongs in the collection of someone like yourself.

68Hawk 11-30-2012 08:00 PM

Gary, that CDV is breathtaking......it really stood out as a museum style archival piece in the auction!

Thanks OldJudge, now I need to decide how much light of day it will get :(.
I desperately want it on display with my other cards, but equally don't want to see that wonderful image fade in a matter of years.

Can any collectors of Old Judges give me their experience of having these photo-style cards out for viewing in non-direct room lighting? Can anyone put a time line for degradation of the image or is the fadeout overstated?

Jlighter 11-30-2012 08:21 PM

Won lot 1018, Brouthers and Griffith, only 2 away from my 1887 Detroit Old Judge poses. I have 26 of the 28 poses.

Need:

Ganzel Pose 179-2, 493 and Twitchell 468-2, 490.

GaryPassamonte 12-01-2012 03:59 AM

Scott- I date the CdV based on the revenue stamp on the back. I believe they were only used in the 1864-1866 period for photographs. In Legendary's description, they refer to the reverse saying Hoboken NJ. The NJ does look like 69 in the scan. I'll get a better look when I get the CdV.
68 Hawk- Thanks! And I have to agree with Jay. Your Harry Wright is sharp.

oldjudge 12-01-2012 07:15 PM

http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...ntoryid=127956

This lot should actually date from 1879 through the early 1880s. Current thinking is that the cards that are uncoated are from 1879-1880 and the coated cards from 1881 through the early 1880s. The exciting part of the lot is that it contains the first (by far) individual card of a black athlete, Hart a pedestrian. This set is the first tobacco insert sports set.

Bridwell 12-02-2012 06:06 AM

Pedestrians

I was wondering about pedestrians as athletes, and found this interesting article about Ed Weston. His card was part of that set from 1880.

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...st-pedestrian/

oldjudge 12-02-2012 12:12 PM

Here is another great article about Weston, supposedly the toughest card in the set:

http://m.espn.go.com/wireless/story?...9692&wjb=&pg=1

And one about Hart:
