With the Crazy Buy It Now prices on E-bay, it makes you wonder do these folks have some special cards that I don't have access to or do they think since THEY own them they are worth a lot more. I realize that it is their cards and they can ask what they want, but it is starting to get a little bit out of hand in my opinion. They have make offers on them but you know you don't have a chance in hell of buying hardly any of them. What do others think? T206's is what I collect.Thanks. Dennis.

I'm sure we're both seeing the same things since I also collect t206s. The prices are so far away from what is fair, I have started filtering the BINs out completely when I browse eBay. For every reasonable BIN. there are 99 that are just a waste of space. I just don't really understand. Do these guys really ever sell any cards with these astronomical prices?

Luke, occasionally they may sell one. I just don't understand why folks don't take the time to educate themselves at least a little bit when they get into a hobby.

Yeah, this seller offers reasonable prices. The only BIN I have ever bought was from them

I don't mind that much. I do get mad when I'm out bid and see the actual card for sale the next day with 5x the winning bid. What a dumb strategy

You just have to hang in there! Eventually, with persistence, you will find a reasonable BIN here and there. Here is one, not a bargain, but priced right for what is one of the tougher commons....

joesvintagesportscard is by far the most reasonable seller I have seen. Also, he always includes scans of the back of the card. I hate it when sellers don't have scans of the back. Ebay sellers should take a lesson from this guy....whoever he is.

I've recently asked about some prices from a couple of dealers--both of whom I think have little experience with pre-war. Most of their prices were based on a percentage of "book" which have a disproportionately high NM since NM pre-war is nearly impossible to find...Due to their lack of experience, they priced the low grade commons at about 10% of book thinking they were giving me a good $ on a f/g t205 common when in fact such a "deal" was x2 x3 the going price of these cards...
Also, some people on eBay are afraid of selling their rare/old stuff for too low so they just stick it up there with a high-price tag and if it doesn't sell, so be it, they'll just keep it in their PC. For very rare items, it is possible to get a tasty $ if the right collector strolls along that has no other options but to buy yours... |

We're talking about T206's here guys. If you don't like the price just wait a week or two and you'll see another one! Patience is a virtue rarely spoken of here.
People here unfairly talk about how all BIN on ebay are overpriced but I don't really agree. Granted, there are some notoriousy high priced sellers (many of whom have tons of items in their inventory) but I think we dwell too much on those dealers when there are many vintage dealers with reasonable BIN's that will often work with a buyer if they request it. I have had great success w/ my ebay store since I opened it and I have dealt w/ many great dealers that also hae great items at reasonable prices (one has been mentioned in this thread). -Rhett

Rhett, I will try to do better on the patience. How about .99 and let it fly, then we wouldn't be having this discussion. I do it, sometimes it works sometimes it don't, you have to take the bad with the good. Most of these sellers (I do not mean all of them) would not lower a price if their life depended on it. Thanks. Dennis.

He is still a bit overpriced, but certainly not as bad as other sellers with out of control BIN's. If you contact him about price, he may come down as he has for me a couple times.

Here's another T206 that recently ended in the B & L auction (a mere 17 days ago, mind you) for a $570 hammer price. It can now be yours for $1,200, or Best Offer!

There are alot of factors that go into when to auction vs. when to BIN...I would almost recommend BIN-ing first and if no sale occurs, considering auction...Extremely rare or quirky type items (including I would imagine many pre-war issues) I would ithink would best be sold as a BIN...
Huge mixed vintage llots or very popular rookie cards and you could be safe and (even benefit) from the auction format...It amazes me how very seasoned eBay sellers don't understand which items should be sold BIN and which ones should be auctioned... There's a guy selling an N172 Paul Hines that has a light photo and a very heavy crease. It would likely grade in the Fair to Good range, and is probably worth around $80-100.
His asking price: $5800. Why? |

Hines' great grandson is looking to buy it.

Lets face it folks, the ebay Glory Days are over. You know, the good 'ol days whith lots of "auction" style listings for nice cards - every week two or three really perked my interest.
Nowadays, no more. Ahh, oh well. I don't spend nearly the time I used to on ebay looking for cards - just not worth the time. So I have stashed my good vintage stuff. Am now working on a display of awesome cards from my childhood - a lot less expensive and I still get out my ebay jollies. I just picked up a 1976 Nolan Ryan, while back a nice 1977 Seaver. Also a 1975 Schmidt with the cool green/yellow border. The great 70's as a kid growing up near Anaheim Stadium - ahh, the good 'ol days ! Wait for the annual REA auction for the really good stuff. cheers |

Seems like one reason may be that all the legitimate prices get bought up immediately, leaving the inflated ones behind. I think some may use it as free advertising for their websites etc.
I'm one of the many who never look at BIN. |

Gentlemen and ladies, ebay is the finest card museum on the planet and it's free to browse. Why all the complaining. It is not really an auction site anymore and hasn't been for years.

I noticed this also. Prices have come down some what and these sellers are trying to get what they got two years ago. I find the auctions are the best, however there seem to be so few willing to put their cards in auction as compared to the Buy It Now. Some sellers have come down in price, like joesvintagesportscards.
