Incredible Oscar Charleston Postcard

Jackson's Auction just auctioned off an incredible postcard which had a military baseball team from 1913 including Oscar Charleston. Almost certainly the earliest known piece of Charleston. The lot hammered for $5500 (+ 20% BP) not to me.

He's standing at the top, second from the right.

If I recall, the 2 Gray's PCs went for $3k. What would you have bid on the Charleston PC?

Maybe my greatest all-time pick-up. I think I'm still in shock. I've done a lot of phone bidding in auctions over the years and I've never had my heart race like it did during this lot. I can already see it becoming my favorite item in my collection.

I would have been more interested in the Grays postcard than the Charleston, simply because I already have a card of Charleston. I probably would have been one of the underbidders on the Charleston and would have focused my attention on the Grays. However, the Charleston is an absolutely fantastic pick up nonetheless.

Never knew anything about that auction nor the company running it. Of course (too late now) I did a quick scan of the entire remainder of the auction, today and tomorrow and not a single relevant baseball item to be found. I guess this post would not have taken place yet if there was anything else significant remaining.......

24th infantry.

24th Infantry, stationed in the Philippines. Joined the army at age 15.

Can anybody guess the name of another Negro League HOF'er who was also in the militarty around the same time frame (not sure if there may be multiple answers to this question)?

Andy Cooper, I believe. Heavy Johnson also played with Charleston on the 24th Infantry squad.

I thought Johnson played with the 25th and after Oscar Charleston left.

Joe Rogan was with the 25th during some of the same years Charleston was with the 24th.

I think they played together, but may be mistaken. Bullet Rogan also played ball in the military.

Lot 6- there wasn't much of a write up to speak up - just a transcript of the text on the back.

Awesome card, thanks for sharing. Are there several white players in that bunch (several on the stairs to the left, maybe more?) An integrated team before they had integrated military units?

No - the 24th was a segregated unit.
