Incredible Oscar Charleston Postcard

Jackson's Auction just auctioned off an incredible postcard which had a military baseball team from 1913 including Oscar Charleston. Almost certainly the earliest known piece of Charleston. The lot hammered for $5500 (+ 20% BP) not to me.

He's standing at the top, second from the right.

Fantastic pickup whoever snagged it.

Wow. Wish I'd known about it it time to have registered. That postcard and a couple of the Grays postcards are awesome.

If I recall, the 2 Gray's PCs went for $3k. What would you have bid on the Charleston PC?

ElCabron 08-24-2010 09:42 AM

Maybe my greatest all-time pick-up. I think I'm still in shock. I've done a lot of phone bidding in auctions over the years and I've never had my heart race like it did during this lot. I can already see it becoming my favorite item in my collection.

Woooooooo Hooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

-Ryan

P.S. Sorry for the excessive celebration. Please don't throw at my head next at-bat.

I assumed it was a fellow collecting addict who out bid me - congrats!

Kenny Cole 08-24-2010 09:56 AM

Matt,

I would have been more interested in the Grays postcard than the Charleston, simply because I already have a card of Charleston. I probably would have been one of the underbidders on the Charleston and would have focused my attention on the Grays. However, the Charleston is an absolutely fantastic pick up nonetheless.

E93 08-24-2010 10:12 AM

That is a truly incredible piece! Congrats Ryan.

Amazing piece; glad it went to one of the brethren. Congrats!

Mark 08-24-2010 11:45 AM

Really nice piece. Congrats. (It's easy to pick out O Charleston: he's wearing #24.)

bcbgcbrcb 08-24-2010 11:57 AM

WOW!!! Fantastic pick-up, Ryan. Congrats!

Cat 08-24-2010 12:01 PM

Incredible piece!!!

bcbgcbrcb 08-24-2010 12:13 PM

Never knew anything about that auction nor the company running it. Of course (too late now) I did a quick scan of the entire remainder of the auction, today and tomorrow and not a single relevant baseball item to be found. I guess this post would not have taken place yet if there was anything else significant remaining.......

mybuddyinc 08-24-2010 12:41 PM

Do you know what military branch he played for ??
Obviously the "24th" something .......

way cool for so many reasons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24th infantry.

Kenny Cole 08-24-2010 12:46 PM

24th Infantry, stationed in the Philippines. Joined the army at age 15.

bcbgcbrcb 08-24-2010 12:48 PM

Can anybody guess the name of another Negro League HOF'er who was also in the militarty around the same time frame (not sure if there may be multiple answers to this question)?

uffda51 08-24-2010 12:52 PM

Great item! Congratulations.

Kenny Cole 08-24-2010 12:52 PM

Andy Cooper, I believe. Heavy Johnson also played with Charleston on the 24th Infantry squad.

slidekellyslide 08-24-2010 12:54 PM

Congrats Ryan! My first thought when I read Matt's post this morning was "I wonder if Ryan won it?"

I thought Johnson played with the 25th and after Oscar Charleston left.

Joe Rogan was with the 25th during some of the same years Charleston was with the 24th.

Kenny Cole 08-24-2010 12:56 PM

I think they played together, but may be mistaken. Bullet Rogan also played ball in the military.

The entire collection of postcards depicting African Americans is the largest ever assembled, and has garnered quite a bit of national publicity. Congratulations to Ryan on an amazing pick up.

bcbgcbrcb 08-24-2010 01:12 PM

Bullet Joe Rogan was the answer I was looking for. Good job, guys!

WillowGrove 08-24-2010 01:31 PM

Congrats on winning!

Amazingly cool item. I am on the auction site and for some reason I cannot find the card listed - I wanted to see their write up - could you tell me what lot it was? If you are interested in selling/trading your other charleston I would love to know what kind of card it is. thanks and congrats again.

Lot 6- there wasn't much of a write up to speak up - just a transcript of the text on the back.

WillowGrove 08-24-2010 01:46 PM

thanks I see it now. Wow - you've had a pretty exciting day already. congrats again.

mannybb24 08-24-2010 06:43 PM

Congrats Ryan on the awesome pick-up!!

Bruce, I just talked to you about the Harrison Studios postcards about a week or so ago but I did not know they were up for auction. Darn, I would have given you some competition for those!! Congrats on the pick-ups!! Let me know if you would ever be interested in selling the Page.

Steve

Matt 08-24-2010 06:45 PM

As I messaged Bruce, I believe the Page is autographed and both of these Harrison PCs originate from the same collection as the famous Josh Gibson that was sold a few years back.

Bicem 08-24-2010 07:11 PM

Damn, that's a nice postcard!

Rickyy 08-25-2010 12:59 AM

What a gem! Congrats on the pick up!!!!:D

M's_Fan 08-25-2010 01:43 PM

Awesome card, thanks for sharing. Are there several white players in that bunch (several on the stairs to the left, maybe more?) An integrated team before they had integrated military units?

Matt 08-25-2010 01:50 PM

No - the 24th was a segregated unit.
