to your larger point...I have really just gotten back into my vintage cards in a bigger way and I have been a little shocked at how much they have gone up.
I would think if your stuff is super high-end, it would probably be a good enough time. The Middle of the Road stuff, the economy will probably hurt you. The big question is, what would you do with the money that you would prefer to owning your cards? I had a friend who sold his collection to buy a convertible, and honestly think he regretted it. It's a nice car and all, but he misses the people he used to associate with and even a nice car is just a car. My minister collected comic books. He is a wonderful man who everyone loves and had amassed as nice of a collection as anyone of ordinary means could ever hope to. But he came to a point where he felt that the collection and the time and effort required to pursue his collection was getting in the way of his relationship with his family and with God. He sold the bulk of his collection and donated the money to charity. He has no regrets. If you have bills, would like the security of paying off your home (which is nice), have a charitable concern that is close to your heart, I'd consider it. If you're just a little bored, there's nothing wrong with waiting a little while...something will spark your interest again. It all comes down to the answer to the question: In what way will the proceeds of selling my collection allow me to do something I enjoy more? |

This post caught my attention as suspect. This is a reasonable question that I would think belongs as a general question in the forum. But to post it in the BST section listing specific cards that would make any collector giddy...not sure what the motive is here...
That said, I would love first crack at that Chase Lenox... |

Strange...Post a BST thread without actually offering anything to buy sell or trade but list a bunch I highly desirable cards and then vanish...

the best thing to do with your cards is to leave them to your adopted son "FUBAR"
He will take very good care of them..... Honestly, if you cannot pass them down then i would suggest you talk to REA or one of the other main auction houses. Those are key cards and would command a good dollar. If you do pass them down, i would leave instructions on the proper way to care for the cards and who to contact if they should ever decide to sell.

List them for auction on http://www.GrandSlamBids.com - fees are maxed at 1.5% - less if your cards sell for more then $250. That way everyone can have a chance at them and you'll get a significantly higher percentage then any other auction venue.

How many registered users does GSB have? That would be a vital piece of information for a seller to have (imo, of course). Edited to add: Should have made clear I meant for a seller of high-demand cards such as some of these. Last edited by Rob D.; 06-21-2010 at 08:35 PM. |

I have known the original poster for several years. I think he has been in and out of the hobby a little bit. I have done some deals with him but it's been several years ago.
btw, the seller could list 30 high end cards on GSB for under $1.00...they could be fixed price at 5% less than ebay, everyone makes more money if any sell and the total risk is under $1.00. ![]()

Thanks Jeff - actually the items closing over the next 4 days are fixed price listings, so they wouldn't have any bids - though several cards from that group have already sold. The auction style listings ending beyond 4 days do have a number of bids.

Well, most of them are fixed price. But most of the other items up for bid which are not fixed price do not have any bids or any bidding of any note. Again, I have no doubt that eventually GSB will be a great tool for buyers of prewar cards but at this time I'd be hard pressed to say with a straight face that it is presently garnering even ebay-level prices. Again, no doubt it will eventually as it's an awesome idea.
But in all seriousness, I was wondering if you guys had thought of starting your own mini-National: pick a centrally located city and have a handful of dealers set up in a small location selling cards which are not at inflated prices? Considering the number of Net 54 members who are focused solely on prewar cards, couldn't such an endeavor be successful?
