Default Seeking suggestions - What would you buy?

This may or may not work....Im trying to convince myself to plunk a little money down on a card that will spruce up my collection. I have a short list of cards that I might target, but Im also thinking about the "what abouts" - an interesting card that I just havent considered lately. So, with that said, what card(s) would you buy or suggest buying at these various levels:

$100
$200
$500
$1000
$5000 and up

Im intentionally leaving this open-ended to keep the ideas flowing. Feel free to be as specific ("this T206 Nap Lajoie") or general ("an E91 card") as you would like.

Thanks for your input!

$100, A nice T206 VGEX Common with really nice eye appeal find one that fits your taste buds.

$200, A nice looking T210 Port Card

$500, A more obscure type card T211 etc.

$1000, A nice example of a HOF player from any set just make sure it has nice eye appeal.

$5000, I'd buy the Red Hindu challenge...kidding. All joking aside here lots of choices one tough oddity...O'Hara T206, Lowdermilk T207 or perhaps a nice lot of G-Vg cards like T210, T212 or a pot luck lot of pre-war from REA

Great thread by the way it will be fun to see what diff. folks pick.

Cheers,

John

Thinking of cards with good spruce:

$100 - T206 Southern Leaguer in the 2-3 range
$200 - T206 HOFer in the 3-4 range
$500 - 1939 Playball Ted Williams in the 3 range
$1000 - Presentable 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth in the 2 Range or Green Portrait Cobb
$5000 and up - E90-1 Joe Jackson

I understand you leaving it open to get more ideas flowing but I would still have to go back to the real question of "what do you enjoy?" If you are a set collector then that is one thing. If you are a type collector that is another. Do you like black and white cards or color? Do you like caramel or tobacco? Do you like cards that have backs, or are blank backs ok. If you can tell us what you are interested in then it might help with some suggestions. If your answer is "well, I don't really know"....then I will assume it's type cards and can give some good suggestions.

It is a good question overall.....

100 - I agree with John...a nice, eye appealing T206
200 - a decent T3 if you can find one (good time to buy), or a mainstream caramel card like E95 E96
500 - if you don't buy a decent T3 for 200, spend a little extra here and get a nice one or a 19th century N162 or N172
1000 - T206 Cobb
5000 - N173 HOFer, N690 N691 N693 K-Bat

I focus on HOFers, so Im not tied down to completing any one set. I just try to find (an affordable) example that I like for each player. Unfortunately, I tend to get tunnel-visioned on certain issues. Like many collectors, I started with T206s for many of the earlier players, but Ive grown to discover and like the Caramels and others as well. I wasnt always fond of some of the blank backed B&W (Goudey Wide Pens, eg), but sometimes it's hard to overlook how affordable they can be in comparison to their substitutes.

I think it depends on who you want to spruce up your collection for, yourself or to show off to people. I'm going to assume here that you want to show off your new card to friends and family who are not familiar with baseball cards that much.

$100 : a decent Mantle

one example:

$200: Reggie Jackson rookie card

http://cgi.ebay.com/1969-TOPPS-RC-RE...-/120497332866

$500: Ty Cobb T206

http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-1911-T206-T...-/130382805558

$1000: a nice Lou Gehrig or lower quality Ruth

$5000 and up: T206 Honus Wagner

For me, this list would change daily. Today it looks something like this:

$100 - Classic 1950's Topps Hall-of-Famer [Mantle, Aaron, Robinson, Mays?]
$200 - N172 or a T200 if you could swing it
$500 - T206 Red port Ty Cobb
$1000 - 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig
$5000 and up - Cracker Jack Joe Jackson

Regards,

Richard.

I narrowed it down to 3 choices for each. My values might be off a little, but so be it.

$100 - T206 Hugh Duffy( i had a buddy named Hugh Duffy who died), 73 Mike Schmidt, Montana rc

$200- Drysdale rc, Reggie Jackson rc, Peyton Manning spx rc

$500- n162 Cap Anson, Nolan Ryan rc, any of the 55 topps hofers

$1000- t206 Walter Johnson( a real nice one) 39 Dimaggio, 49 Jackie Robinson

$5000+- E120 Ruth, 33 Goudey ruth, 49 Leaf Satchel Paige

Chances are i would buy some signed baseballs if i had the cash, I have always wanted to have a nice case on my wall with 100 or so balls.

Default Different Price Points

Your post got me thinking what HOFers I've actually bought in the last year or so. At each of those price points, here's what I came up with:

$100 (Grover Alexander 1921 Exhibit, S. Crawford, Dietsche postcard)
$200 (Waddell T3, Cobb B-18 blanklet, Dizzy Dean Gold Metal Flour)
$500 (Joe McGinnity Ullman Postcard, F. Baker T227, Bender T207)
$1000 (W. Johnson T207, Cy Young T206 Portrait, Matty T206 Portrait)
$5000 (Haven't spend this much, but maybe a Goudey Ruth or Gehrig)

Hope that helps.

I appreciate all of the comments so far. There are some nice suggestions up there. I grinned at a few suggestions because they're already in my collection and some of my favorites.

Thanks!

$5,000---10 Red Hindus in PSA 1... (I wish!)

Since this is the only price point in which im currently interested in, my $5,000 would be spent on the best BL460 T206 I could find.

$100----Nice T212 Obak graded SGC 50-60 range

$500----1914 T213-2 Coupon Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson

$1000---I just bought a 1933 DeLong Gehrig SGC 40 for around that price...so that's my suggestion.

$2000---Caramel Honus Wagner card (Batting) or Maple Crispette Ruth

$5000---I would go for a set at that point.

T213 Coupons! Yeah, that's one I hadn't considered in some time, but I definitely want to add a few. That suggestion has me thinking....
