1895 Hugh Duffy Mayo -- Autographed

Did anybody from this Board wind up with the Hugh Duffy signed 1895 Mayo card in REA a couple of years back? |

...if anyone is aware of an earlier signed baseball card. At the time of this sale in 2005, REA represented that it was "the earliest traditional baseball card we have ever seen signed by any player." |

I have the Duffy. There is an autographed Old Judge Mack with a beautiful fountain pen signature on the back. I believe it came out of a Mastro auction. |

Thanks. I'd love to include a scan of the Mack on my website. I already have the permission of the E96 owner to post that one, which I have done. |

There is a signed cabinet of Henry Chadwick that dates to 1874 (to commemorate his 50th birthday). I don't know exactly when he signed it. It's pictured on page 7 of Smithsonian Baseball. However, that does not qualify as a card. |

Wasn't there also a thread a few months back about some possible signed Buchner's. I believe Frank Ward had a few that he thought were fake but another board member posted other Buchners (different from Franks). My memory may not be correct however. |

There are signed CDV's of players in uniform which go back to the 1860's and 1870's which I am sure would qualify as cards to some degree. |

I don't see anywhere on the authenication label where the autograph was certified. I'm guessing that the low grade is because GAI probably felt that the card was "marked" with ink. It could have said Fred Flintsone on it and it probably would have still received a 1.5 grade. Does anyone else feel the same about this? |

sweet card Joe. I know with his temper, he didn't sign for fans very often. |

I believe that the statement "GAI Certified" on the flip is a statement of authentication. |

Duffy was fairly responsive through the mail in later years--too bad so few collectors back then sent more than 3X5s, GPCs and scraps of paper to be signed. I echo Al's sentiments (the CARD is authentic). |

Regardless of the GAI flip, the auction description states that the card comes with "LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA". |

I would be very interested to see the LOAs from Steve and Jim. This HAS to be a typo. |

I have sent the PSA/DNA and GAI LOAs to Leon to post. I guess I have the Spence one at the bank but both other LOAs mention it. |

Yes, the E96 Mack is one for four in authentications (assuming that question was for me). |

Ken - send that in to get graded! Now I don’t want to get your hopes up but that may be a genuine signature. |

I wouldn't waste your money sending the O'Rourke in to get graded. It is not real, not even close, and there are eraser markes all around the signature where someone tried to make the autograph look faded. You cant beat the price though as you said and even with pen on it, its worth more than you paid. |
