As far as official cards, I am aware of an 1886 Old Judge Mack that is signed on the back. I used to have a signed E96 Mack, but another board member owns it now. James

Lately, I've been trying to identify all known signed examples of baseball cards pre-WWI. I'm certain there are signed CJ's out there, and other signed caramels, than the ones I've identified. 1895 Hugh Duffy Mayo -- Autographed

Posted By: barrysloateThere is a signed cabinet of Henry Chadwick that dates to 1874 (to commemorate his 50th birthday). I don't know exactly when he signed it. It's pictured on page 7 of Smithsonian Baseball. However, that does not qualify as a card. There are also some signed CdV's of Boston players from the 1870's, including Harry Wright. That comes a little closer to a card.

Posted By: RhysThere are signed CDV's of players in uniform which go back to the 1860's and 1870's which I am sure would qualify as cards to some degree. I have a signed CDV of the man who started the Union of Morrisania Baseball club which dates to about 1862. Who knows if that counts or not. If you want to get technical about the earliest signed baseball cards listed in the price guides, there was a complete set of signed Warren Studios cabinets a few years back that hit the block. They were some of the most visually stunning signed pieces around. The Duffy and Mack are the some of the earliest signed cards but they were most likely each signed in the 1940's so the cards are reallt old but not the signatures. Rhys

Posted By: Fred CI don't see anywhere on the authenication label where the autograph was certified. I'm guessing that the low grade is because GAI probably felt that the card was "marked" with ink. It could have said Fred Flintsone on it and it probably would have still received a 1.5 grade. Does anyone else feel the same about this? Edited to add - I don't think GAI certified the auto, only the card.

I was the original consignor of Jay’s Mayo Duffy to REA and the one who had it authenticated by GAI. I purchased the card off E-bay about 4 years ago as a low grade filler but it ended up being the genuine article. At the time of my Duffy purchase, the same E-bay seller had 4-5 other signature Gold Coin cards (including O’ Rourke) up for auction. They all came from the same estate and I have been kicking myself ever since for not bidding on all of them. I think I paid about $70 for the Duffy and the Gold Coins went for about $20-30 each. I have been wondering when they may come back up again. I guess the key question Ken is when and where you purchase yours from!

Posted By: RhysI wouldn't waste your money sending the O'Rourke in to get graded. It is not real, not even close, and there are eraser markes all around the signature where someone tried to make the autograph look faded. You cant beat the price though as you said and even with pen on it, its worth more than you paid. I remember a seller listing about 10 Buchner/T206 signed cards on ebay about 3-4 years ago. I bought a John Ward knowing full well it was fake, but a real card anyways for around $50. They were all fake signatures on real cards signed with some type of a felt tip pen in the 1970's to deceive but the problem is that the cheap pen ink had faded slightly over the last 30 years and that slightly resembled older faded ink. I dont know if that is where your Duffy came from or another seller but I remember a T206 Matty, McGinnity and Jennings as well as a couple of John Wards etc and some other Buchner cards too. I make no assertations on the Duffy, but every card from the specific ebay grouping I am refering to was fake.
