Front appearance is everything for me with N172s. I wonder if anyone can guess the grades of these. |

I agree with JimB....those are likely all PSA 1's....great fronts, but back damage. I feel the same. I am happy with nice OJ fronts and don't look at the backs: |

All the examples offered are terrific, which brings up an interesting question: what causes Old Judges, among other photographic issues, to fade? Exposure to light doesn't make sense, as the majority of survivors were kept in scrapbooks or cigar boxes and never saw much light at all. So were they light coming off the press, due to an overused negative? |

Without referrence to any cards depicted in this thread, but have others noticed that both PSA and SGC seem to be much more tolerant on corners when grading N172s than with almost every other issue. Regularly I see cards graded 84/7 that would be 5s at best if they were T206s. I have also seen many 6's and 7's that have images that are so faded, one can hardly make them out. I think there need to be a serious rethinking of how to evaluate N172s by grading companies. |

Both of them have a history of being unwilling to change when faced with a similar collectible: our earliest cents and half cents. These were manufactured under comparitively crude technology. Before electricity and during a time when each die was hand engraved. This coupled with an inconsistent supply of copper yielded a collectible which demands insightful criteria be established and employed. |

Here's a low grade nice image of Radbourn. I'd take this over a PSA6 with a light image. The reason for a grade of "1" is because there is scrap book remnants on the back of the card. |

I've posted these before, but what the heck. While there are other higher grade OJs, the Gypsy Queen & N173 Cabinet are highest graded by SGC (representing all 3 Goodwin & Co. sepia baseball issues). ![]() ![]() Best Regards, Joe Gonsowski |

I buy OJs based on the subject and then appearance of the front. The scrapbook removal creates relative bargains I guess -- although getting a really nice looking card back with a "1" still feels bad... |
