Posted By: barrysloate
All the examples offered are terrific, which brings up an interesting question: what causes Old Judges, among other photographic issues, to fade? Exposure to light doesn't make sense, as the majority of survivors were kept in scrapbooks or cigar boxes and never saw much light at all. So were they light coming off the press, due to an overused negative?

The same could be asked about pink Old Judges, which typically have poor images. What caused so many of them to have this flaw? Perhaps poor reaction to chemicals used during developement? Jay Miller once suggested the pinks were done deliberately, as an experiment, but I just don't know.

Posted By: Fred C
High grade?

I've seen enough OJs in 6 or 7 slabs that have nice sharp corners but poor images. Let's define "high grade" as the term applies to OJs. I'd take an OJ that has a crisp clear image which resides in a "2" holder over an OJ in a 7 or 8 holder that has a light image but razor sharp corners.

Posted By: JimB
Without referrence to any cards depicted in this thread, but have others noticed that both PSA and SGC seem to be much more tolerant on corners when grading N172s than with almost every other issue. Regularly I see cards graded 84/7 that would be 5s at best if they were T206s. I have also seen many 6's and 7's that have images that are so faded, one can hardly make them out. I think there need to be a serious rethinking of how to evaluate N172s by grading companies.
JimB

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Both of them have a history of being unwilling to change when faced with a similar collectible: our earliest cents and half cents. These were manufactured under comparitively crude technology. Before electricity and during a time when each die was hand engraved. This coupled with an inconsistent supply of copper yielded a collectible which demands insightful criteria be established and employed.

Their unwillingness to modify their techniques has resulted in them being ignored by the majority of the collectors in this area of numismatic specialization. I forcast the same occuring with OJs and similar issues.

Posted By: Fred C
Here's a low grade nice image of Radbourn. I'd take this over a PSA6 with a light image. The reason for a grade of "1" is because there is scrap book remnants on the back of the card.
