Default Doble Aguila years and set information (1931-35 Venezuelan)

I am fascinated by the early 1930s Doble Aguila cards from Venezuela. They have some Negro League players and learning more about the baseball teams is also fascinating. For example, 1934 Concordia has some of the best talent ever assembled (Dihigo, Gibson, Vargas, Dixon, Aparicio).

However, as best as i can tell there is no checklist. It is also unclear how many sets there are. There is some conversation from an earlier thread but would love more conversation. My best guess is that there are three sets -- 1931, 1932/33, and 1934/35. The 1934/35 have a light grey outline. The earlier two are harder to distinguish. I am pasting two examples below where I am guessing the baseball one is from the first set and the horse racing the second.

Anyone learn more? Ryan Christoff? Others?

Ryan just sold a Dihigo from 1934 during his last auction. First one I have ever seen and sounds like the only known version.

https://cubanbaseballauctions.com/bi...ce?itemid=2992

1934 Doble Aguila cards were issued to commemorate games played between Royal Criollos and and American Atleticos on January 14th, 1934. Of the three known examples, the highest number is 23, so presumably there were at least 23 cards issued, but only three have ever surfaced. And one of them (#21) happens to be none other than Martín Dihigo batting. On the reverse it says, "Martín Dihigo conecta un rolling a segunda base." All three of the 1934 Doble Aguila cards that exist came from the collection of the top collector in Venezuela who collected Venezuelan baseball cards for over 60 years. I obtained them directly from him in Caracas 20 years ago. The other two examples (#2 and #23) both feature common or unnamed players. It's remarkable that Martín Dihigo was one of the cards that survived, making it both Dihigo's rarest card, and probably the best Venezuelan baseball card ever produced. The only 1 of 1 Martín Dihigo card.

Boxing subjects are found with black borders and numbers ranging from 66-233. These are not consecutive, so there are undoubtedly some other subjects in there. Looks like 66-78, 95-155, and 201-233(+?) are nearly all boxers.

An interesting reason why practically every Venezuelan baseball item looks like it went through a couple of tsunamis before leaving its native land:

According to that recent interview with Pat Quinn, who was directly responsible for a lot of VZ material getting into your hands, Venezuelans didn't ascribe any monetary value to cards and collectibles, yet they thought enough of the material to hang on to it. A lot of people down there lived in houses with no basements and the first floors were raised off the ground. Consequently, people would store a lot of their old collectibles and other stuff with no perceived monetary value in these spaces, leaving them prone to critters and the elements.

My one and only Doble Aguila, since I am a Cincinnati fan. Unfortunately, I don't know the players pictured.

I have something similar. 65-78, 108-150, 201-230 for boxing. Where I get thrown are the horse racing ones many of which have the same number as a baseball one. There’s also the 1934 as was mentioned before which I know are quite rare.

Some of the baseball ones reference the 1931 season. Some of the horse racing mention the 1932-33 season. But a whole lot of cards do not have a date. Also, some cards have the Doble Aguila back while others have the E Quintana but I can’t sort out how to tell the year.

This is an interesting thread. While I only have a few Doble Aguiles in my collection, this is by far my favorite since it depicts Dihigo in a Hilldale jersey.

Enjoy,
Mike

My only contribution. Adding to the other Tetelo Vargas cards.

Been keeping my eye out for a Concordia copy to pickup and I just received this one: #290 Concordia vs. Cincinnati. I was especially happy to grab it since I can't find it listed on any attempted checklist or mentioned before.
