The Babe auto aside, why in heck did someone write out Lincoln's Gettysburg Address on a piece of bank stationery and then get The Bambino to sign it?? I know Wilkes Barre isn't too far from Gettysburg, but what the hey?? Inquiring minds want to know, what is the connection between Babe Ruth and this piece of paper or that bank?

I'm far from an autograph expert, but I feel I have a pretty good eye for Ruth. I'm about 99%+ positive this is no good. It would also be atypical for Ruth to write the name of city and date it. In addition, the "a" and "e" in "Babe" are off. The "a" is a little too narrow and pointy, and the middle of the "e" is too pointy as well. In my honest opinion....

Authenticity aside (although I happen to agree with BPM on this one), I simply don't like this piece aesthetically. Both it's condition and placement on the document greatly detract from its ability to be properly displayed.

Actually, after examining this a second time, I'm 100% convinced it's no good. Almost every letter in "Barre" is off. When Ruth writes "Sincerely", the "ere" almost look identical. In "Barre", the "r" and "e" are distinct....and wrong. No good 100%.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I need to get better at identifying a good Ruth signature myself. The story I got was that it was obtained in Wilkes Berra during a barnstorming game. I have read that Ruth played up there and also hunted and fished in the area. That's all I have but would love to hear more and learn more about the Babe's auto. Thanks again.

I could be completely wrong but shouldn't he have been at Spring Training on March 4, not barnstorming.

I see your point on this, but have to disagree. The "e" that I'm having a big problem with is the "e" in "Wilkes". Whether it falls at the beginning, middle, or end of a word, that particular letter formation isn't close.

The relation of the letters to where they fall in the word, isn't as important as the connection of the letters ("r" to the "e") themselves. If someone can post a picture (or mulitples) of how the Babe writes the word "Sincerely", you'll know what I mean. They are extremely uniform. Here, they are vastly different. Nor do his "r's" even remotely look like the example above....

I am certainly no expert in the Babe, especially his very day handwriting. What I know is that his "E"'s in his regular handwriting always look like the funky E in his signature. The R's in the OP (in Barre) may be a bit off but not terribly so, especially if there was an issue with the writing implement which seems like it may have been the case here.

I don't know. If that is a fake Ruth, it is a really really good one.

That said, I agree that the media and placement thereupon leaves a ton to be desired.

I agree that it's bad, but I disagree that the 'ere' look identical in Ruth's writing. Compared to this example they might seem to look identical in a good one (because here it's horrible), but when comparing two examples of 'Sincerely', one good and one bad, by forgers that were even halfway thinking, the forgery can often be spotted because the letters DO look identical.

I also agree with you about the 'a', but while his 'a' is often narrow, it doesn't come up to the 'b' that way.

Just my two cents - nice not to have any skin in the game on these discussions.

Hi Scott. To clarify, I said the ere almost look identical (although you can definitely spot a subtle difference) in an authentic one. But yes, we are on the same page haha. The example above looks nothing like an authentic one.
