What am I missing as to why this trimmed card has such action?
Posted By: Zach Smith
I agree that 10+ bids is a fair amount of people... but I wouldn't really call $23 a whole lot of action. Maybe somebody looking for a card to get closer to that set?

Posted By: Anonymous
One possibility is that someone may think that the card is not from the V100 Willards. This card, however, is in fact from the Willards set.

To elaborate on my point, a little over a year ago a dealer put up five cards on eBay (Bob Meusel, George Burns of the National League, Dickie Kerr, Everett Scott and Jake Daubert) listing them as trimmed Willards. I won all five and was able to prove that they were not Willards, but Shapira Big Show Candy cards because of the trademark. Also, the pictures did not appear in the Willards set. The trademark on these was Underwood and Underwood, which appears on Shapira Big Show Candy cards and Fleischmann Bakery cards among some other sets. Willards have the trademark of International.

Maybe somebody thinks they are trying to pickup a bargain.

Posted By: fkw
Wasnt there a Ruth in that Schapira find??? I remember that auction, and a couple other Schapira card groups. Thats the way I have found all my Schapira Big Show cards, people didnt bid cause they didnt know exactly what they were or thought they were trimmed V100's. Picked up a couple for under $20 back when eBay was a great place to find a bargan.

I think people bid on this trimmed V100 because they didnt know it was trimmed. There are a lot of newbee vintage collectors bidding blind without researching what they are bidding on.

Posted By: Anonymous
Frank,

There was no Ruth in the lots that were offered by the dealer. I do, however, remember when the Cobb from the set was offered and didn't meet reserve several years ago. Congratulations on picking up that card. I wonder, outside of the two of us, how many people knew what set that card was from.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
but it seems that only 2 are chasing it, at least one of whom is a Reds collector. Maybe it fits a team collector's need.

The card is noticeably trimmed on 3 sides even if you don't know the proper measurements. Still, it presents OK, which is why I bid a whopping $7 in mad money. There are alot of low grade collectors out there, although I admit, the current high bidder's strategy indicates he may not know this card's market value. But hey, who hasn't made a thirty-something dollar mistake?

Posted By: warshawlaw
on this same set with a Hornsby trimmed just like the card noted in this string. And it had the same handwritten notation on the back, so I assume it came from the same source. Mine was GAI authenticated; the flip did not note the trimming.
