Posted By: Mike B
I wanted to see if board members could give their opinion on acceptable sizes of some card issues. I realize they vary, but trying to get a range on cards that are not trimmed or graded
T205
T206
T213
T216
N172
E90-1
E92
E95
E96
E102
M101-6
S74 Colored
Diamond stars
I know things are not exact, but any help would be appreciated. I have some cards from these sets, and like many of you, I am getting ready for the National.
Thanks,
Mike

Posted By: Todd Schultz
my m101-6 range in width from 4 5/16" to a hair over 4 7/16", with a range in height of 6 13/32 to 6 1/2", so about 1/8" variance one way and a little less the other way.

Edited to add that I would beyond careful if I found one of these with sharp edges and corners, as the stock and of course age do not support them surviving in that condition (unless maybe they were glued onto something). They could have been trimmed long ago, I suppose, but odds are a trimmed m101-6 will stick out like a sore thumb, IMO.

The data is like a histogram, but not in graphical form.

This particular collection is about 98% Piedmont, the others are Old Mill.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/message?forumid=153652&messageid=1090717955

Posted By: Julie
dimensions in the Standard Catalogue (and elsewhere)--I think what he wanted is provided by the poster with the link: a list of actual measurements which he personally finds acceptable (no trimming) within a given set.

I know the Standatd Catalogue provides size for the Old Judge set, and also that mine are all over the map. I imagine the older the card (also, the less sophisticated) the more variation there is.

It's interesting that someone mentioned in one of the strip card threads that he prefers the old, badly-cut originals to the neatly trimmed ones that have been showing up more and more since condition and grading became such a huge factor (even though the neat ones will grade--up to a point [a card with no border, I would think, would be rejected for a number grade]}.

Posted By: Anonymous
Is it ok to assume that the major grading companies will accept these variations in size as common to the issues or do they have their own max/min dimensions that come into play (short of actual clear signs of trimming)?? Does anyone know?

And sometimes a card that is rejected for being too small can get resubmitted and come back the second time in a holder. At some level it's just a game of outmaneuvering the graders.
