Why are E98 designated with the "E" if they are anonymous?
Posted By: Dan Bretta
Especially considering they are also found with the old put tobacco overstamp on them. Is it possible that this set was only issued with tobacco products?

Why are E98 designated with the "E" if they are anonymous?
Posted By: robert a
Hi Dan.
Good question that's been discussed a bunch before too if you wanna search it later on.

I think e98 has been grouped with the e cards for obvious reasons including the fact that the poses, players used, and design is so simliar to other caramel sets of the time period.

Also, the Old Put overprint could just be a stamp that was placed on the cards by a retailer rather than at the factory.

We should call them T/E 98.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
1.) Because they are almost exactly like the other E93-E97 sets in size and design.
2.) Caramel stains found on the cards. Nearly all that I have had have had candy stains on them.

-Rhett

Why are E98 designated with the "E" if they are anonymous?
Posted By: robert a
Dan.
It's very difficult because there are so many connections to different caramel sets.

e98s have quotation nick names on the back like George Close candies...on the other hand, e98s have numbers before the names on the back like Standard Caramel E93.
Basically, there is no one thing that ties the set to any maker, hence the anonymous tag.

Lipset's book highlights quite a few more connections which are very interesting.
robert

Why are E98 designated with the "E" if they are anonymous?
Posted By: Paul
Besides looking like E cards, I suppose it is also possible that collectors who purchased these cards when issued were still around when the ACC was first published. They may have remembered the cards coming with caramel or some other candy.
