Sometimes I Stare At Groups of Cards
Does anyone else stare at groups of cards the way I do, to the point of being slightly mesmerized? Knowing I am the first owner outside of the original family that has owned these is so cool (like many of our stories).
As most will remember, we auctioned around 160 T206s, on the main page, from this collection. They certainly aren't high grade, especially with the original scrapbook removal remnants, but I sure like them the way they are. Still raw. I guess if they are ever sold they might need plastic tombs, what a shame. https://luckeycards.com/t206x4.jpg |
I get that feeling all too well Leon. Another hobby I have is metal detecting. I have had the great opportunity to hunt Civil War sites. I dig a bullet, a button, something, from the ground and I get that same feeling.
Over 160 years ago this was shot, dropped, discarded in the place I find it, and I'm the first person to uncover it after all that time. How did it get there, who dropped it, what was going on at that particular time? History, regardless of how it is presented can be an awe inspiring and sometimes overwhelming thing. Thanks for sharing!!!! Butch. |

I'm not an influencer voice or commanding the respect of a slew of people, but I always recommend anyone into graded vintage cards go out and get some low-cost raw examples of the card types they like so they can handle them.
It usually enhances the appreciation of their collection in a way that would otherwise be ignored. |

Do I stare? Yes, I do. I find groups of cards very stare-able.
I stare at groups of cards, therefore I am. Here's a display of 1936 Batter Up high numbers. They look great punched out and scanned against a black background.

Easy to get lost, gazing lovingly at those huge borders!

I not only stare and gaze but I also drool
Heck when I get a catalog I tend to fold the corner To remind me to go back and do it again Note—- JollyElm probably has a definition for this disease |

My ex-wife could never understand why I would take out my card binders and look at the same cards over and over. Now you know why she’s my ex-wife :D

Odd but I like owning cards that were from an original owner collection. I will even pay more for cards that are from an original owner.

Another group I stare out.
Interestingly, I bought the green one from Mike Berkus (RIP) from ebay, many moons ago. They cost me a bit more the second time around as they originally sold in my first collection sale, as almost everyone knows (not everyone!). The Net54baseball member knew he had me hostage :) I am still glad I paid the ransom to get them back though. No doubt others have done similar things. In the middle of buying them, but hadn't committed when I saw Brian Dren.t, at a show. He said go for it and I did. I was probably going to anyway, but a little boost always helps. |
The divine beauty of the old school, page flipping 'album view' continues to disappear as the plastic army surges onward to conquer all.

Well done here guys.(do we even have female members? Anyone?)
Brian especially nice. What do you think Kling is about to cook there? I found these especially mesmerizing when i bought them, beautiful large sized cards…kids must have loved collecting these! Great piece of history, imagine issuing a set like this today (well, i think we have fireman calendars?). (Sorry, i need better photos, best i have right now.) |

I do a lot group staring. I have a little stack of P-F T206’s on my desk to play with during meetings at home.
I keep my Kentucky, aka BG League, guys next to the TV in the office. I’m a huge fan of having stuff around to handle during boring meeting, random sorting and so on. My quantity of cards is pretty small, outside of the childhood sets in the closet. It he big stuff stays in the safe, so I actually look for random less valuable stuff that I like to just mess around with. Enjoy, Bob |

Sadly, most of the 1914 CJs shown below are no longer in my collection but I still love taking the cards that I do have out and just spreading them on a table to enjoy looking at them from time to time. |

Scrimshaw, T210s and blonde bombshells. What's not to love?
About twenty years ago when eBay was the Happy Hunting Grounds for vintage collectors I won a set of 1950 Bowmans that was carefully mounted in a scrapbook Lionel Carter style. It was my birth year so I was thrilled to acquire it.
