Dolly Gray “no stats” T205

2 Attachment(s)
I’ve just come across a really interesting error card in the T205 that I am guessing many collectors here probably know a great deal about.

I am working on helping a friend organize a substantial collection for sale - and I now see that he has a T205 Dolly “no stats” Gray card in amongst his cards

I’d love to hear from veteran t205 collectors who can add their own knowledge about the card and the variation.

Here is Dolly

(FYI I fixed my post so as to not confuse anyone on which of the two versions is more rare/valuable)

Anson had a nice write-up about the 24 known errors in the T205 set on his website:

https://prewarcards.com/2018/03/12/t...ly-gray-stats/

and number 6 is below:

6. Dolly Gray No Stats

One of the more desirable error/correction cards involves Dolly Gray. T205 cards were unique as they were one of the first sets to include statistics. But while stats did appear on the cards, most versions of Gray’s cards don’t have any.

The error was fixed but few of the corrected cards are out there and even low grade versions of them are hundreds of dollars.

The no stats Gray cards are available in five backs (Honest Long Cut, Polar Bear, Sweet Caporal Factory 25 Black, Sweet Caporal Factory 42 Black, and Sweet Caporal Red), while cards with stats are available in just Piedmont 25 and Sovereign backs.

So the ones without stats are more common. I know I have two without stats, but none with stats...I am usually quite reluctant to pay a premium for a variation.

Just go to ebay and look up "T205 Dolly Gray" and you'll find several of the "no stats" version for sale for under $100.

The "with stats" version on the other hand, sells for between $500 - up depending on condition.

The "Stats" card is much tougher. People know that the Hoblitzell No Stats is very tough and tend to put the Gray No Stats in the same thought, but it is the easier of the two Gray's.

Ok, I got it all wrong… yep, the stats version, not the non stats, is the more rare and valuable of the two.

Doh.

The line of stats on the error version comes from the back of Ed Phelps.
Maybe a line of type was not removed from a plate, or erroneously added.

Damn, I never saw or knew that little tidbit, but yea, looking at them, you realize they're batting stats, and Gray was a pitcher.

I have a full basic set, minus all the reverse variations, and the Gray with stats is a card I've been looking to get, but I guess now, I'll remove it from my wantlist.

Thank you!
