New Member from the Carolinas

Hi, everyone.

My name is Kevin and I live in Charlotte, NC and spend a good amount of time in Columbia, SC.

I am attempting to build the 72 Topps baseball and football sets in EXMT or better condition.

I will be guilty of making the occasional purchase of other years and other sports. :)

Looking forward to interacting with the group.

Welcome aboard. The 72 Topps was a great set. I remember collecting them as a kid...

Welcome to the cardboard sh*tshow.

You don't happen to have a jar of Vegemite in the cupboard and greet people with a hearty, "G'day, mate!!" Do you??

We've learned to be on the lookout for Aussie scammers lately. (Yeah, it's an inside joke.) :D:D:D

Welcome form just south of Raleigh! This board is the best thing around

Thank you. I do not.

LOL. Before I read the entire post, I was trying to figure out a potential southern jab. :D

Thank you both.

By chance, are either of you familiar with the upcoming Charlotte show next month (or the ones in Raleigh)?

It's a good thing, too, because Vegemite is by far the most disgusting stuff put on the planet that is supposedly edible. I used to work for an Aussie company, QBE insurance, and I used to get ribbed horrifically about my distaste for Vegemite. And Aussie humor is not subtle.

Originally from Cornelius, NC and now in Winston-Salem, so not too far away from you. I too am working on a ‘72 Topps Baseball set.

Welcome!

How is your set coming along? Lemme know if I can help in any way.

Welcome from Maryland!

campyfan39 08-20-2024 02:51 PM

I've been going to the Raleigh shows since I was a kid in the 80s. It depends on what you are looking for, but I always enjoy it. The next really good one will be in December at Dorton Arena, although I will go to the one next month and look around.

Thanks for the info.

The goal would be to knock off some 72 Topps set needs. Not sure how best to accomplish that - maybe find someone with a box or starter set that will sell individual cards or smaller lots.

Welcome to the board!

I am from Dallas but will claim a South Carolina affiliation with my wife being from Greenville SC. We visit often.

Best of luck on your 72 Topps sets!

Raleigh Area

Welcome! I will be set up at the Raleigh show next month, it's a pretty good show. The Charlotte show is a new one, but seems promising. If you don't make it to Raleigh, there is a show in Salisbury in October that will have a lot of the same dealers. As for local shops to you, AAA Sports Cards in Matthews is one of the better ones around. Good luck on your sets!

Welcome Kevin!

Kevin, welcome to the board - there really is a terrific group of folks here and the depth and breadth of card knowledge is daunting. You can't do better than to surround yourself with this group here. Oh, and I'm just North of Raleigh, in Wake Forest and while I enjoy the Raleigh and other local card shows, the shows around here are generally 95% modern/ultramodern - you know, that sparkly, shiny stuff which isn't interesting to me. That said, you occasionally run into a surprise or two.

Welcome again! -Marc Mandel

Thanks for the welcome and show info.

Hitch-hiked in 1970 from Virginia Beach down the Outer Banks to Morehead City and thence to Greensboro with an old girlfriend. Gotta a nice eyeful of your beautiful state. Never been back but did put together a nifty set of T209-1 Contentneas about fifteen years ago. Can't say enough good things about Net54. Great place for a vintage collector. Welcome.

Nice. What made you decide to collect T209-1 Contentneas?

I am the quintessential unfocused collector. I have cards and sets from every category. I thought that the Contentnea First Series would be easy since there are only sixteen cards. I was in error. Some of the cards were toughies back then and probably all the more difficult now. Either way it's one of my favorite sets. They have the rustic and colorful appeal of Obaks with southern charm thrown in.

Welcome Kevin. Great forum for discussing cards. Are you going for all of the variations like the yellow and green variations under the team letters as well?

Thanks, Zach.

Yes, I am.

It’s been a bit since I’ve “researched”, if you will, but I am aware of at least 5 errors/variations - 4 Cubs with green under the C and S and a Checklist card with the copyright in a different location on the back (bottom left).

Are you aware of any others? Do you collect those, too?

Good call out - I was somewhat toying with the idea of starting a thread on that very topic.
