M114 photos

Just came into a collection and found some of these. That I found very interesting. I've learned that they are M114. No, nothing more as far as if they are gradeable or value. Any additional information would be very welcome to. Thanks in advance

Unless something has changed recently, these are too big to fit into the largest slabs, so my experience is that they aren't graded. I guess someone could try to trim the borders down to get them to fit, but that would be a rather foolish approach to get them into a slab.

Value isn't usually a lot. Part of the fun is that most of these M114s are in rough condition. They're just so big that over time they get wrinkles, corners get bent or chunks get pulled off, and there's often toning or staining or pinholes. My experience is that for most of these, you're lucky to get $25 or $50.

While what you said it logical, it isn't necessarily true. If you search m114 psa on ebay you will see a few incredibly overpriced examples of severely trimmed m114s which all received number grades from everybody's favorite seller of opinions.

Not really that surprising since the first card they graded was also trimmed.

Hi MGoBlue2007 - Welcome to Net54. I have a fairly extensive collection of both the m113 and m114 issues and would be happy to answer any questions you have to the best of my ability.

I am always looking for more, so feel free to post any others you have. I am interested in the Cy Young that you posted (mine is trimmed), so maybe we can work a deal, I have many to trade if that interests you.

Doug

I’ll be damned. I did find 3 M114s in PSA holders on eBay, all for Mantle (or his team “card”), all trimmed, and all asking 5 figures. So I guess there’s good money to be made in M114s after all!

Well, they will only make "good money" if some idiot gets drunk enough to hit the buy-it-now for a severely trimmed item. Based on the length of time those have been listed I'm not sure that the seller(s) will be vacationing with their profits very soon.

For anybody interested in the ones on ebay, here is mine next to a slabbed one, let me know which one you perfer. Price is the same, hahahaha.

Insert smiley face here.

Doug

PS - according to the pop reports for our favorite opinion seller, there are 21 m114s in slabs. All are Yankees. All are "hand cut". There are multiples of each Mantle pose from ebay (but none of his third pose), and I would guess that each pose was resubmitted until it got a '2' so there are really fewer of them in total. Note that they are not called m114 on the slab, only Baseball Magazine posters.

Hilarious...They designate them as Hand Cut...These were not meant to be cut...these are trimmed and likely so they fit into a scrapbook. The Hand Cut designation I thought was for cards that were intended to be cut like strip cards, Bazooka, Post, etc.

I agree that it's hilarious, and with most of your other points, but I disagree that they were trimmed for a scrapbook. I would bet that they were trimmed in advance of the purchase of the opinions.

Doug,

Great collection. They are beauties. I did send you a pm.

The only nice thoughts I can muster about those PSA slabs are that PSA graded those early on, before they knew how Baseball Magazine photos are supposed to look. And that they wish they'd not graded those that way.

Reckon if someone trimmed down an M114 to a similar size, and then sent the newly trimmed version along with one of the previously graded in the slab Baseball Magazines, maybe someone could ask, "please grade this as you did this one already in one of your holders." Think they'd grade another?

The M113s are a monster to store, and M114s aren't all that much easier. I think if all of mine were slabbed for free then they'd be better protected from handling damage, but it'd take a delivery truck to haul them to a bank's safety deposit boxes.

Well, since I don't have any nice thoughts about the opinion sellers, I will just repeat, and leave sitting without comment, a portion of your post that has been valid on an uncountable number of occasions, with all of the opinion sellers :

"graded those ... before they knew how (insert item here) are supposed to look"

This one was the first graded and it is not hand cut/trimmed.
The second through how ever many submitter convinced PSA that these are all handcut and that is what PSA lists the entire category now.
I got them to slab the "6" too from one of Kelly's articles. Mine was already trimmed...I most definitely would not have trimmed it down to fit a holder.

Doug - PSA lists as Baseball Magazine because that is how they are checklisted in the big book.

Nice one Ben, I agree that it isn't trimmed, and good point about the big book.
