Grover Cleveland Alexander Help on Authenticity

4 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I just received this Grover Alexander autograph and would love to get some opinions on its authenticity. It is on a non-postmarked government postcard.

Thanks for any help,

Matt

Not authentic, IMHO

The bleeding in the ink is a giveaway. Postal cards are cardstock which is a harder paper. When it is signed with a fountain pen around the time it was manufactured you would not get that type of bleeding. The paper will soften over time and then you get these results when you try to sign it with a steel tip pen or flair. This may be signed with either a fountain pen or an artist dip pen. Both have nibs with the split in them which you can see in the signature. You can find these older 1¢, 2¢ and 3¢ postal cards at stamp shows on on ebay for pennies. Some people are using these for TTM to current athletes probably thinking it makes them more valuable.

Thanks so much for the thorough explanation. I assumed when I bought it that it wasn't genuine, but got it so cheap that it was worth the gamble. The frame and matting that came with it are worth what I paid, so not completely out.

Thanks again!

100% no good. Sorry.

There are a bunch of these horrible uncanceled GPC that just hit the market, all no good-so be careful.

Thanks for all the feedback. I don't think its that new. It was matted & professionally framed and looks to have been hung on someone's wall for a while. But I still skeptical when I bought it having noticed that it was missing one of the e's in Cleveland.

Thanks again!

It is so bad that it's hard not to laugh. Good thing you didn't "pay up" for this one!
