More card history needed

Is it me, or does it seem like in the last few years the front page has been taken over big time by posts about the business of collecting. Taxes, eBay, PSA, PWCC, vaults, fees, charges, etc etc. Not pointing fingers at anyone. And I've probably been as bad as anyone with the state of the collecting posts and where the market is going, etc. I plead guilty.

Just seems like we need more Ted Zs educating us about obscure sets and issue dates and less people bitching about fees, paying taxes, market fluctuations, etc.

One nice thing about this board is that it stays very active with lots of topics. Going back to the original board there have always been "Hey, did you see that card on eBay?" style posts. Lots of info is on page 2 and back. I know if I started a thread about T213-2 captions it would fly to page 2 because it is not a broad enough topic. I will talk about sets if I see something new, otherwise I read whatever others are talking about.

There’s plenty of research threads or new variations or new backs brought up; they just get 0-10 replies for the most part and disappear quickly because that’s clearly not what many people want.

I am guilty of this as well, but to be honest, I feel like this is where the card collecting community is right now. For better or worse, there is a general card obsession with the following topics:

Card Prices
Card Grades
Card History (VCP, where did it come from)
Auction Houses and Record Sales
Are you buying, selling, or holding?

Maybe this will all calm down in the next year, but right now, these topics get the most traction/responses.

I agree with all you say, and I understand the incredible values of these cards. I know I have egocentrically submitted numerous obnoxious posts complaining about it. Hopefully YOU GUYS who have considerable sums invested can somehow forgive ME. I admit I do enjoy the stories and the history more than the investment stuff, but I am learning to keep still in those posts and threads that just simply don't pertain to me. I get it that it's not all about me.

It seems that a lot of the great research, and history, threads don't get much traction. A few do, but most don't.
I thought those very early auctions were awesome. So did 3 other people. Now if I said I was thinking about a Net54 NFT or something crazy, I would gets lots of feedback. It is what it is. I suggest anyone that laments, the way I do sometimes, start a good E or T card thread (other than more freaking T206s LOL).....
The back of this one is so "not" politically correct. It seems like an awkward statement today re: "Though a full blooded Indian, he is mild mannered and quiet". .... I know we have talked about it before but still...
.

You have officially exceeded the understanding of 72.7% of the current US population. ;)

I will bite on this one as I do love the TT's.

My understanding is that a Texas Tommy was a candy or candy bar. Has there ever been a discovery of a wrapper as I would love to see one.

Love Texas Tommys, such a mysterious set. I'll work on making a post about them. In the meantime here's a tin from the Cardinet Candy Company of Oakland CA. maker of the Texas Tommy candy bar.

Don't forget:

Cashing out your 401k to buy cardboard
Mortgaging everything you own to buy cardboard

Here is a link to an educational thread I started (ok, also partly showing off)

https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=312952

I tend to agree with others that educational threads tend to appeal to a niche group and they do not carry the same appeal as a more broadly-based subject like the state of the market or a TPG. For example, I would love to discuss variations on the E92 backs and why certain players have certain backs. But a thread like this would get 10-15 replies and then quickly drift to the 2nd page only to disappear.

Lookie here, I have reposted a nine year old thread thanks to Steve. Here is the link to that thread, which hopefully some will find helpful/useful/interesting/worth its weight in gold:

I've never collected them or researched the history; however, I have seen the cards.

I always thought Texas Tommys were hot dog cards.

(go ahead, laugh...I kinda deserve it on this one)

^^This...but also as a member that does not necessarily collect pre-war.....seems to be an avalanche of what I would call "humble bragging" threads...some are interestung..many are not...but maybe to the majority they are??
