Did I get scammed with a counterfeit Jackie Robinson?

Had anyone encountered this before…

I recently purchased an SGC1 1953 Topps Jackie Robinson on eBay. The card was sent through eBay’s authentication services and came back to me as authentic. This card is for my binder set so when I received it I cracked it open as I’ve done hundreds of times before. The card looks, feels, and smells legit to me. However, the label has been sitting here on my desk for about 2 weeks now and I just happened to pick it up and noticed that the ink was smudging. I ran my thumb across it with very little pressure and it erased the entire label. The ink just wiped right off like it was a dry erase board. I’ve never encountered this before with any SGC or PSA labels. Has anyone else? Is this a fake card or at best a fake slip?

I will go out on a limb and say the ink just wasn't settled on the kind of paper the flip is on. The card looks fine and it's a 1. It's not like someone tried to put a higher grade in the holder. That is my best guess :)

Authentic card.

Card looks good to me.

A dry erase type of label would be a scammer's dream come true.

Does the SGC Cert match a Jackie Robinson and have you looked to see if the cert # has ever sold where maybe you can see an old pic? Obviously, no issue with an "overgrade" unless the intent was to cover up an alteration (but who would alter a card that is a "1" after alteration?). The bigger concern would be an aged reprint that is put in a fake SGC holder to avoid scrutiny.

You're good, it matches the card that SGC has a scan of for that cert#.

Maybe your thumb is highly acidic.

Thanks, all. I really appreciate everyone’s input. I thought it highly unlikely that a 1 would have been tampered with but I couldn’t believe I easily I was able to run off the ink. I guess I won’t be keeping that flip in the binder.

Real nice card, BTW! I am a BIG Jackie Robinson fan.

+1 Agree and like the eye appeal

Highly acidic thumbs are a collectors worst nightmare. I know 2 or 3 collectors who have given up card collecting due to this rare, but real medical condition.:):):):)

There have been several praises recently of how fast SGC processes orders maybe they're getting them out so fast that the ink doesn't have time to dry on the labels.

You know how cards have a gloss covering the entire image? Perhaps (in a different way) the labels have a 'fixing' layer as well, and it got skipped in this instance??

Smudge

Older flip, but yeah it happens.

I think the card is good and everything but that's crazy that the label would wipe off completely like that.

Yeah, agree on both counts. Not thrilled though that the label can be so easily and cleanly erased. Someone will, if they haven't already, figure out how to use the old labels to print new ones creating a counterfeit item. Anyway to let SGC know?
