1952 Syracuse Chiefs Globe Team Issue
 

Have 18 all from one source. No auto on front, low resolution photos. Appears to be of local Syracuse origin rather than actual Globe Printing. However the number in set (18) suggests a "Globe" connection. Mine are identified on back (handwritten). Scan is of Bobo Holloman.
Has anyone found any of these "on the street?
Checklist Betzel, Blatnick, Corbitt, Costello, Drescher, Eisinmann, Fandich, Hartley, Hayworth, Holloman, Keegan, Plumbo, Robinson, Upton, Woop, Welaj, Workman and Zientara.

This was moved from another section, and it is almost pre-war, so it got moved here for a few more eyes. As a type collector I love seeing rare stuff. I don't think I have seen these before.

John.I've had two groups of these, both "inside the hobby" and both appear similar to your example. Initially they look like the mid 70's PCL Popcorn cards done by Ed Broder, but I believe these are period. These are the only style Globe cards that I recall using this printing method. I'm convinced that these were a local production "inspired" by the Globe format. Tellingly Syracuse does NOT appear as one of the 1952 teams listed in the 1953 Globe advertising flyer.
Can you recreate the names of these that you've handled?

As I recall, only a few of the cards in each group were identified on the back. The majority were blank. Both groups were acquired from 'inside the hobby' so I did not have the opportunity of quizzing the original owner, or family for additional info. While Globe is responsible for a number of issues in the late 40's / early 50's, the Syracuse issue , if it is indeed produced by Globe, utilizes the largest screening that I've seen... Mark

John, I know a very long time collector in the Wash., DC , area who collects the post-War oddball issues and has a number of the Globe Printing cards. (I know nothing about these cards.) I asked this collector if he has any 1952 Syracuse Chiefs cards, and he responded that he has one, that being of Bruno Betzel (a coach), which is 1 of only 5 cards listed for this set in my 2011 edition of the Standard Catalog. He says his card has the players name printed in cursive at the top of the card (see pic below). My Standard Catalog says "Player names are in black in a white strip on front," but I'm sensing the Catalog is in error in this respect.

Unfortunately, this collector doesn't do computers, scanners, etc. I asked this collector if he would bring his Betzel card to the Chantilly Show today, as we had already agreed to meet and do a trade. He responded that his card was in his safe deposit box and not readily accessible, but that he had a picture of it that he would bring to the Show that I could take home and scan, which I have done (see below). His picture appears to me to have been made on a copier, and below are the best scans I am able to make of it.

In addition to the name in cursive at the top of this card is the word "Cards" also in cursive. I suspect this refers to the St. Louis Cardinals, who Betzel played for from 1914 through 1918. I further suspect that a previous owner of this card typed this info onto this card. Anyhow, here it is for whatever help it may be to you, John:
