Money is no object - What sets do you collect?
Hey guys,
I was thinking today about what sets I would actively pursue if money was no object and thought it would be cool to see what others would choose. Not favorite players or team collections, but just what sets would you work on? For me, I came up with a few off the top of my head today. 1. n690 - Kalamazoo Bats - I like the size of the cards and the images, also there are plenty of cool horizontal and two player pose cards in this set. 2. m131 - Baltimore New Newsboys - Have always been drawn to these as they are basically the same set as e94 but all blue and more rare. 3. e98 - All four colors of each card 4. n175 - Gypsy Queens - Another set that I have always been drawn to but have never been able to chase. I'm sure there are many more, but I just thought of these four right away. So what would you work on and why? |
The T210 set and anything else would be a very distant second. For now I have focused on the Ft Worth team set.
|
E224 Texas Tommy
|
L-1 leathers. What a great display that would be.
Bill |
33 or 34 Goudey. All 8s.
|
88 Topps
|
E107
|
I'd still work on the T206 Providence master set but I'd be able to chase the rare back combos.
|
GC Miller and high grade 53 Bowman Color
|
N172 master set w/ N173's and N175's.

Why a complete T206 set, of course. Surprised I am the first to say it.

If money were no object, I'd finish my T205, T206 and T207 sets, along with the N172 HOFers.

T3, most beautiful cards ever made by far in my opinion.

Darby chocolate
|
1914 and 1915 Cracker Jack.
N28 Allen and Ginter Complete t206 |
N167, N172 and E107 would be at the top of my list

My one wish is they used some of the t9 color schemes or different backdrops for few if the subjects. The boxers get no love! |
Baseball Prewar: T206
Baseball Postwar: 1952 Topps Modern: 1997 Flair Showcase Legacy (#'d to 100) Boxing: N269 Lorillard boxing master set Basketball: 1961 Fleer Football: 1957 Topps Hockey: 1973 OPC in high grade Nonsport: 1976 Topps Star Trek in high grade |
Probably T206 for me as well. I like to collect complete sets, and the only way I'm completing a T206 set is if money is no object.
|
w600 would be fun too.

1916 Sporting News Baseball Cards and the Various Advertising Backs
|
1914 Cracker Jack combined with the high number and different variation cards that are in the 1915 set, all in something around Vg condition, which, as noted in another thread, is the best condition of all. My old cards should look somewhat used, even if money was no object for me.

Money is no object..... t206 all cards, all possible backs for each...
|
Great replies so far. I thought of a few more that I would want to work on.
1. e285 - Rittenhouse Candy 2. 1929 Leader Novelty 3. 1910 Orange Borders I know these would be tough, but it would be a blast to watch these sets slowly grow over time. Remember, money is no object so don't limit yourself to just one set, especially if it is a tough set to complete. You can work on as many as you really want to with unlimited funds. |
Prewar...T206 (or maybe '14 CJ)
Postwar...'53 Bowman |

Same thing (set) I’ve been collecting
If money were no object, the Hindu-backs I’ve let go by I’d make a run at. Same with four of the five Cobbs I know are out there. That would leave about 30 Piedmont or Old Mill backs to get all of the 47 or so Howe-stamped cards I know are out there but not in my collection. Might even hire a detective to try and track down his Piedmont-backed Honus.
|
Already mentioned, but the various Goodwin & Co. cabinet cards.
|
N28 Allen and Ginter
T206 T200 Fatima E91 Old Judge T202 M101 Frankly, most of the things that I'm interested in collecting now, but with actual velocity in acquisition. I would also love to try to assemble a full back run in some of the rarer backs (Sovereign and Tolstoi being the favorites). |
1 - 1916 M101-4/5 master set of all advertising backs.
2 - 1921-22 E121 American Caramel and all the related issues - master set of all advertising backs. 3 - T214 Victory Tobacco. |

I'll follow Adam's template above -
Baseball (Pre-War) - 1914 CJ Baseball (Post-War) - 1954 Topps Modern - 1978 Topps (when I was young, this was vintage to me) Boxing - 1948 Leaf Basketball - 1986 Fleer Football - 1957 Topps Hockey - 1951 Parkhurst Non-Sport - 1940 Superman |
If money was entirely no object, being that I'm not picky at all....
I'd go for something VERY simple, like multiples of every set ever issued for every sport throughout the entire history of the world, all in stunning high grade - the best examples known and available, all displayed in a multi, multi-acre museum-quality setting. This would include living players posing by displays of their cards, complete stadiums purchased, dismantled and reassembled on-site, and the DNA of past legendary stars gathered - where possible, to clone a modern super athlete who would serve as both display demonstrator and customer service greeter. ....If this isn't possible, I'd probably just move on then, as it would allow for more productive things than baseball card collecting. |

Of course with money not being an issue, you could hypothetically collect everything, but where is the fun in just clicking Buy It Now on everything just to have it? The chase is where the fun is at. Having no money issues holding you back, you can go after the cards you're chasing when you find them, but if you're not looking for anything in particular, there is no adventure.
Keep the ideas coming guys, this has been more fun to follow than I thought it would be when the thread was started. :D |
For the majority of these dream sets, all the money in the world won't complete them. Many well healed collectors have tried and still fell short....
There simply aren't enough of the cards available, especially now. E107 for example, when I started it circa 2000 and got close by 2008, I bought three collections of over 100 cards at a time along with dozens of small groups, acquiring over 500 cards total and still needed several. Now you will be lucky to find a few commons and HOFers here and there. No one has yet to complete it and the three closest have ample assets to pay up should the cards come up. Such is the case with many, many tough issues. |
