1941 Double Play-80 Year Old Problem SOLVED
Whats the 80 year old problem? Kids and scissors! But I think I've discovered a way to display my "combination" set of cut and uncut cards.
At the conclusion of Birmingham Auctioneers latest offering, I was the "lucky" winner of the lot of 66 '41 Double Play cards, all cut in half. After purchase price, buyers premium, shipping and insurance, I paid $3.86 per card. Remember the Standard Catalog states "Cards which have been cut in half to form single cards have little collector value". I may have solved the 80 year old problem of how to display the cards, using TCVerify "Mylar Sleeves". The cards display beautifully, and the cut cards don't appear to move around at all! About the only problem I'm having is deciding which number 31/32 Ott/Young to keep? Glad you are enjoying your purchase, we were very curious how they would go. Along with the Williams and the DiMaggio that were sold separately. Consignor was thrilled with the results and it sounds like you were too. That's a perfect result as far as I'm concerned!

I think two other "cut in half" '41 Double Play cards were sold during the completed auction mentioned above. #63 Joe DiMaggio and #81 Ted Williams. I'm really bummed that I didn't go harder on those two separate lots as I have the "partner" cards #64 Keller and #82 Cronin!

Gotta say...kudos to that 1941 kid with the scissors. That's some clean, accurate cutting. My 1961-63 Post cards do NOT show that level of coordination!

Keep both. The cut ones do look nice, but there's something about uncut ones too.
You can always move both someday when you upgrade. |
Congrats on the win Larry -- I was the one battling it out with you down to the wire. I did win the Ted Williams, which is scheduled to arrive today, but I would be happy to work something out to get it into your hands.

Excellent win. There is so much history with this set to begin with, but the photos used and the players are what makes it a fun -and still affordable option for collectors wanting to get in to vintage. Way to go!

This is a fun set to go for in low condition, because quite often that means nice looking cards cut in half, which any self-respecting kid would have done back in the day. Heck, I did it to the 1980 Topps basketball set, so my Bird and Johnson are separate.
I have the complete 75 card Double Play set, or basically complete, as 68 of the 75 are cut in half. I used Card Saver 1 sleeves as shown in my Mize/Slaughter card, and they also work well in keeping the halves together. I say go after a complete, in-half set, and keep any complete cards too...why not? Brian |
