The Michael Pressner & Co. issued this 24-card set in 1943. They were sold in Candy stores and 5 & 10-cent Department stores in the form of 8-card strips........

Cards on the 6th sheet of the 1933 Goudey set were issued circa Spring/Summer of '33. This fabulous sheet includes double-printed cards
of Babe Ruth (#144).

Including Babe Ruth (card #149), Lou Gehrig (card #160), Jimmy Foxx (card #154), Leo Durocher (card #147) and Moe Berg (card #158).

Speaking about the "1933" GOUDEY Lajoie....here's the the 1934 Hi# series sheet (cards #73 - 96) in which GOUDEY modified to include the Lajoie (#106) card.

T212 uncut sheet from 1911 - discussed on Net54 back in 2010, auctioned by H&S that fall (image from H&S).

Note the bottom row in the image - runs horizontal, the rest are vertical.


My interest is that T207 was likely printed via the same process (cards running both horizontally and vertically) as evidenced by an Adams card (shown previously) as well as the example from REA a few weeks ago that has parts of 5 different backs showing (image from auction).

When Bowman introduced their first BB card set after WWII, they continued using their "PLAY BALL" Trademark on their wax-pack wrapper.

The printing of the 1948 BOWMAN set is very interesting.....the printer took their 36-card production sheet and produced a 48-card set. In their 1st press runs
they printed cards #1 - 36. Then, in their later press runs they modified their printing plates by replacing 12 cards in the first group of 36 with cards #37 - 48.

The 36-card uncut sheet shown here represents the later press runs. Cards #37 - 48 are interspersed among the lower number cards. Therefore, this process
created Double-Prints of 24 low numbers....Single-Prints of 12 low numbers....and, another set of Single-Prints of the 12 high numbers.

I just want to point out that the 7 "Short Prints" are all in a row on the left side of this sheet and I wonder, as with many other Topps issues of that time is there a 2nd sheet which would confirm the long-held suspicions of those 7 short prints.

I will also state as a collector/dealer who worked on those sets, those 7 cards tended to show up on most want lists and were far easier to sell.

Also -- I know someone in the DFW area who accumulated a couple hundred (I did not count) of the Mantle and I would certainly call Mantle a Double or even a Triple Print

1949 BOWMAN (1st series sheet)
 

In some regions of the country the 1st series of BOWMAN cards in 1949 (circa..April-May) comprised of 36 subjects. In other regions, 72 subjects were available.
As a kid growing up in Hillside, NJ in our neighborhood all 72 were available.

On display here are cards #1 -3, 73, 5 - 36.

BOWMAN printed 7 sheets (36-cards each) to produce this set of 240 cards. The first 6 sheets have been discovered. I don't know of anyone who has (or has seen)
the 7th sheet. If anyone on this forum has seen, or even has a 7th sheet (cards #217 - 240, plus 12 variations) please post it here.

1949 BOWMAN (3rd series sheet)
 

The GRAY (or SLATE) cards on this 3rd series sheet are normally either GREEN or ORANGE. This color printing mistake on this particular sheet occurred
occasionally, as a considerable number of these 17 mis-colored subjects have been found over the years.

The BOWMAN GUM company got us kids all excited in the Summer of 1949 when they issued these 36 cards with facsimile autographs on their backs.

In 1982, I traded a 1951 Bowman Mantle (Vg) rookie card for this sheet in a Sports Shop in Media, Pennsylvania.

Five retired players are included on this sheet. George McQuinn has a great story....in the twilight of his BB career of how he "sparked" the NY
Yankees into winning the AL Pennant in 1947. That June, he was the AL batting leader (.392). His defensive play at 1st base was outstanding.

1948 BOWMAN GUM Football sheets
 

Sportscard collectors (young and older) had a tough time trying to complete the 1948 BOWMAN Football set. The 1st series of 36 cards were available early in the Fall of '48.
The top line on the backs of these cards read...."NO. x IN A SERIES OF 108". However, the cards were issued "skip-numbered". A clever marketing trick that we know was in
the 1933 GOUDEY set and the 1949 LEAF BB set. BOWMAN issued this set in 3 series....the 3rd series cards were short-printed. If you were persistent in completing this set,
you would have accomplished it by December 1948.

I was lucky to have all 3 uncut sheets of this set (diagramed here on the 2nd page of this SCD article). Therefore, I wrote this article.

1952 BOWMAN FB (large cards) uncut sheet
 

Saved the best for last.....of all my BOWMAN sheets. It is my favorite sheet. The artwork & color is some of the best you will find in any post-WWII sportscards sets.

I acquired this sheet in 1982 at the Sports/Hobby shop in Media, Pennsylvania. This sheet represents the 1st series of the LARGE version (printed Fall-Winter of '52).
These 32 cards reflect BOWMAN's first attempt to compete with the very popular 1952 TOPPS BB cards. BOWMAN reprinted their smaller 1952 FB cards, which were
originally issued in early Fall of '52. With this larger version, Bowman increased the card size to 2 1/2 " x 3 3/4 ".
Football HOFer's featured on this sheet are.....Sammy Baugh, Paul Brown, Otto Graham, Charlie Justice, Y. A. Tittle, Charley Trippi, and Frank Gifford (rookie).

Since 1982, I have searched for another one of these sheets, to no avail. I guess, we can say this is a very unique piece of sportscard memorabilia.

Seattle popcorn card uncut sheets
 

Here are two Seattle popcorn card uncut sheets, 1957 with autographs, and 1965 which shows the four cards that were issued with blank backs.

I'd be curious if there is a 2nd 67 sheet from that series. If so, all the cards are printed equally. If not -- we have 44 DP's and 44 regular prints. Or 44 SP's and 44 regular prints depending on how you look at your glass (Half full or Half empty)

I just want to point out that the 7 "Short Prints" are all in a row on the left side of this sheet and I wonder, as with many other Topps issues of that time is there a 2nd sheet which would confirm the long-held suspicions of those 7 short prints.

I've seen 3 of these sheets in 20+ years of looking, and own/owned 2 of them. They were all exactly the same.
In the '70's Dodger Stadium used to sell envelopes of '64 Giants, 25 cards for a buck. We bought TONS of them, as it was the easiest way to get cards of players that had retired before my friends and I started collecting. Koufax was almost as plentiful as Mantle (and way more popular in LA) and there were tons of Stuart, Cisco, Mays, Causey, etc. When we started trading thru the mail about '73 my friends and I put together and sold complete sets, and it didn't appear any card was tougher than others. At the monthly card meeting in Garden Grove one guy always had a table stack high with them, I assume he had access to vending cases. So based on all of this and the sheets I don't believe there were short prints on that set.

FWIW when I was putting together a high grade set about 10 years ago Johnny Romano was the card that eluded me for months in PSA 9.
