REA surprise outcomes?
I was surprised how much the only 51 mantle rookie sold for...over 15K in psa 4.
What else surprised you? http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...e?itemid=44406 |
I thought the prices for Exhibits were a little weak in light of the inflation we have seen lately. But some of them had some condition issues that were hard to overlook. For me at least.

T3 Cobb's.

It's very clear collectors are prioritizing eye appeal above numerical grade. As evidence from what I was watching: - I lost a Goodwins Champion Cap Anson SGC 1 (Poor) once it went above $3k. (beautiful front, though). - I also found it interesting that a CJ Cobb SGC 4 went for $18K, while an SGC 7 went for $22K. The 4 looked incredibly nice, and the bidding reflected the card IMO, not the grades. |

I was surprised that the 1925 Waycross team photo, featuring Joe Jackson, went as low as it did considering that RMY Auction sold it for around $5,500.
|
The psa 2 ruth rc seemed high to me, as did the sgc 3.5 52 mantle. I was hoping that psa 5 n162 anson would stay a lot lower. Congrats to aj on the nice pick up.

The prices for both the 3.5 1952 Mantles seemed high, particularly the $50K result. Wow!

We're saying the Mantles are high now -- anyone want to wager if you sold those 51 and 52's two year from now -- they would sell at a profit. In today's world -- I'll wager they would.

T3 cobbs, cjs, t206 grn prt cobbs seem very strong
e107s seemed low... |

Tough to say. I really don't subscribe to the "buy high, sell higher" mentality, but Mantles have just gone nuts. |

The PSA 4 1951 Mantle in REA had great eye appeal for the grade.
The SGC 4 CJ Cobb also looked dynamite. |
The gorgeous 1914 CJ Walter Johnson PSA 5 ($20,400).
|
Seemed low...
The silks colored - W. Johnson sgc 84 and Matty sgc 80 seemed quite low. They gotta be a couple of the finest copies anywhere.
|
I fully agree with Matt. Both have awesome eye appeal. Centered iconic cards like these have a life of their own.

First day cover with the HOFer autos.

Anyone else surprised by the babe Ruth signed balls pricing? Have those gone up? I was watching the multi signed ball with young Cobb and babe and Wagner. Etc.
|
surprised I only won one item:(

I love the offbeat and non-sports cards. I mentioned the Howard Hughes card from the 1936 Heinz Aviators set in one of the other REA threads; I was blown away by the action on that card on the final day. The Howard Hughes card in that set is a great rarity, and doesn't come up for auction too often. In 2014, a PSA 5 of the Hughes cards sold for $657 with Legendary. In 2012, a PSA 4 sold for $478 with Legendary.
The Hughes card at REA was a PSA "5" ended at $2,040 with the BP. Yikes, non-sports cards don't often triple like that in three years, especially in mid-grade. |
A Wildfire Shulte game used Cubs bat from early 1900's for $13,200! That's insane. It's a $400-$800 bat. Makes no sense.

The green Cobb PSA 2 that went for 5400. I am willing to bet someone thinks they can get the tape residue off the back and turn the card into a 4 to make a few thousand dollars on the card.
Keep those eyes peeled. |

Pete that 51 Mantle has almost perfect color, registration, and centering. Almost unheard of in any grade for that card. The corners look like a 6 or 7. Some light staining which is probably less noticeable in hand appears to be all that down grades. Certainly looks high end to me.
The kind of card that appeals to collectors such as myself, including a few board members here, as well as someone who might be thinking they can clean it up and get a bump. |
I thought so too on the E107s (said the guy who bought a long-sought Monte Cross :D ).
I was surprised that the T3 Lennox went for so much (PSA 5 for $3600) - I have a very nice raw copy that I think perhaps I ought to get graded. As the owner of a T205 blank back I was also surprised/happy to see the Krause blank back hit $2040. I don't know much about them, but I thought the OJ cabinets would go for more. Quote:

I thought the Psa 4 Bowman Mantle had a decent amount of staining too.
Still a nice card and wish I could afford one graded that high but if I could I would have passed on that one. |

In any case, buy what you like, but I don't think this "centered Mantle" fetish is going to last. Not to the tune of 3x what one would pay for a nice card of equivalent grade just a little worse centered. |

The REA Mantle's hammer price makes the one listed in BST look like a good deal. PS - I have no stake in the BST Mantle (or the one sold in REA), but I do have the 51 Bowman Mantle in a PSA 5 that I will gladly sell for $18k based on these prices...! |
Yea maybe not quite perfect on the registration Peter but close. I did not buy this card but still think it's very high end for the grade. I figured it would go high for a 4 when I saw it. Apparently at least a couple of other people agreed, which is all it takes to break a VCP record.
|
No question it's a strong 4, I just wouldn't pay a 3x premium for it unless my motive was to doctor it and bump it (and not disclose it of course).
|
Incredible CJ 14 prices for PSA 6 and 7 commons and a few HOFers--blasting all previous records out of the water. Might just be 3 guys competing but wow. Some tripling previous top values.

48 leaf pack - record for unopened single pack?
The ungraded 1948 leaf wax pack went for almost 50k. Hard to imagine pulling that much value out - but this probably means it never gets opened. Anyway it might be a record price for a single wax pack. The high series 52 packs only hit 18k last i checked.

If I owned a complete Leaf set, I can't think of a cooler way to complete it than with an unopened pack to go with it. But 50k is obscene.

I'm guessing that whoever bought that pack plans on keeping it unopened in their amazing collection of unopened packs.

To continue with the surprising prices of unopened packs, the current Memory Lane auction has a 1948 Bowman Basketball pack at $35,000 with nearly 3 days left http://memorylaneinc.com/site/bids/b...e?itemid=42937

I collect packs and other collateral pieces- they go along with a complete set. Uncut sheets, packs, tobacco tins, salesman samples, whatever. No more tempting to open a pack than cut up a sheet. |
