Scorecards and Scorebooks
3 Attachment(s)
Thought I'd throw out a thread for interesting or significant vintage scorecards and scorebooks. I've been collecting scorebooks for about ten years and I've seen some really nice scorecards/scorebooks spread around in other threads, particularly Ted Z's Troy scorecards and I know Doug G has a large collection he might share. Any others out there, please show them off.
I'll start out with my favorite - Harry Wright's personal 1883 scorebook while managing the Providence team. It covers a little over a month and includes multiple games against each of the eight National League teams and all of the major league stars of the day. Harry Wright's initials or signature is at the bottom of most of the scoresheets. It also includes Old Hoss Radbourn's no-hitter against Cleveland, the ninth major league no-hitter in history. Rob M. Here is a scorecard from 1946. Playing first base for Yale is future president George Bush. This is just after his return from the war where he was a navy pilot during WWII.

This one features Anson and Kelly.
Sorry for the small scans, but this is the way they turn out. When attached to an email the scans are large, but on Net54 they always come out small. Help! |
Programs have always been my favorite items with my focus on those prior to 1920. Here are 5 from my personal collection that are among my favorites that I have posted before.
1) 1871 Chicago - the City burned down a month after this game was played but this souvenir survived unlike the Chicago team uniforms 2) 1876 Chicago with Spalding pitching 3) 1908 Tigers and 1908 Cubs regular season programs 4) 1918 exhibition program with Ruth on the cover and in the lineup for this game that took place a week after the 1918 world series. Only example I have ever seen. http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...psbibbzu5x.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...psyciepmz4.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...psvzxbqpuk.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...pshpgblvhf.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...pscbnsfikm.jpg |
Nice scorecards. Looking at that 1871 scorecard - I guess corking bats started a lot earlier than I would have ever guessed according to the advertisement in it.

Uh Chris, is that signed by Buck Ewing? Really cool thread. |
I don't think so, but I've never tried confirming it.

Carrigan's own scorebook from 1896-1898. Dropped it taking in off the wall.

Are there a lot of games scored inside? Any pics of the inside? Rob M |
It is full. About 30 games, most kept score by Carrigan. Lewiston/Auburn vs Surrounding teams. I can take some pics of individual games.

This is what I believe to be the official scorekeeper's scorebook for Shibe Park (Philadelphia) for games from the end of the 1945 season and first half of 1946. It has the home games for the Phillies and the A's. The cool part is that it also has several games between the Negro League teams including the Philadelphia Stars, Newark Eagles, New York Black Yankees, Memphis Red Sox, Chicago American Giants and Baltimore Elite Giants. This was a pivotal time just at the end of WWII, when many ballplayers were coming back from military service, and just before Jackie Robinson began the integration of baseball in 1947 (which was the beginning of the end for the Negro Leagues). Some of the Negro League players include: Willie Wells, Monte Irvin, Biz Mackey, Don Newcombe, Roy Campanella, Buzz Clarkson, Harry Simpson Larry Doby and Leon Day.

It also contains a St. Louis Brown's 1945 game with the "One Armed Wonder" Pete Gray in it. I find it interesting if not a little humorous noting that Pete Gray came in to pinch hit in the ninth inning for catcher Frank Mancuso. Could you imagine hearing from your coach, "you ain't hitting worth a crap so we're putting in the guy with one arm to hit for you".

This is a team scorebook from Clarion, PA that includes some negro league teams: 1930 Homestead Grays, 1931 Homestead Grays & Baltimore Black Soxs, 1929 Havana Red Sox and 1948 Homestead Grays. The game below pitted the power house Grays against the Black Sox. The rosters included Oscar Charleston, Josh Gibson and Martin Dihigo.

My oldest is a 1905 Cardinals scorebook vs Cincinnati. Its in incredible shape and to my surprise, someone inserted the St Louis Globe Democrats's game write up inside, causing discoloration from over of 110 years.
