It's Rabbit season...Let's see some 1914 Miracle Braves

Today the Braves inducted shortstop Rabbit Maranville into the club's Hall of Fame. A lot of fans today don't realize what a great player he was defensively and what a drawing card he was for the Boston franchise at the time. As a rookie in 1913 he finished third in the voting for what is the equivalent of today's MVP award. In 1914 he helped lead the Miracle Braves to a World Series sweep over the Athletics and he finished second in the league’s “MVP” voting (to teammate Johnny Evers).

Anyway, later this season the Braves will celebrate the 100th anniversary of that 1914 championship, when they will host the Oakland A’s and have a “turn back the clock” game. Let’s see some Miracle Braves cards (anyone - not just Rabbit).

The 1915 Cracker Jack card below is not mine, but is one of my favorite cards of Rabbit (followed closely by the 1933 DeLong).

Nice scorecard, Frank. What player is on the front?

I always loved that nickname, "Rabbit." I wonder why nicknames went out of style.

Can't forget Bill James.

Not the famous sabrematician, but Bill James pretty much was the pitching sensation that allowed the Miracle Braves to happen. 26-7 record, 1.90 ERA, won two of the four World Series games. From July 9 through the end of the season, he was 19-1, with a 1.51 ERA. He was literally unstoppable.

From the 1931 All-Star team that toured Japan. Not from the same era, but the same Rabbit...

Here's an image of Miracle Braves ace Bill James from two years prior, when he played the same role in leading the Seattle Giants to the Northwestern League pennant. He and catcher Bert Whaling were members of both teams.

An article we posted a few years ago which illustrates the Seattle connection to the Miracle Braves:
