Ty Cobb/Detroit Tigers Postcard H.M. Taylor

Hi,

I posted this some time back on the SGC boards. I inherited this card from a family member and have no provenance on it whatsoever. The postcard was sent to SGC but it received a "NO" and SGC indicated "Questionable Authenticity." The little paper that came back with it had five bubbles that could be checked and "Other/Comments" was selected. "Counterfeit" was not selected. The card in hand looks very nice but it has sort of a gloss to it. There is no mention or reprint anywhere on the card. Was there at any time a run on counterfeit/reprints with Cobb postcards? Also, should there not be gloss on this postcard? Just curious if it is even worth sending to PSA?
Was this SGC basically not being able to determine the authenticity?

The postcard measures a tad over 5 inches x 3 1/2.

Thanks for any information.

I agree with their assessment. I would save your money on any more grading fees.

I should add, yes, I don't think SGC felt it is a good card but maybe not enough to say it is an outright counterfeit. We lambaste the TPG's for making mistakes but, in my experience, they need to be very comfortable with a card's authenticity before they will slab it. If they aren't sure then they will do as they did this time.

If this helps any, I know mine is real...
looks like the "Rights Reserved By H.M." is different. And the Post Card Lettering...

With any valuable card, there is always the danger of reprints. You might put your card under black light and see if it illuminates. (It should not.) I agree with the others, however, in that the card doesn't look right. The pictures just aren't crisp.

If it is glossy, it is a reprint.

Yup and I told him exactly that over a year ago on the SGC boards. Not sure why he wasted his money sending it in. That said, there are two versions of this postcard. Notice Darrin's above and this SGC graded one below.

Same postcard, slightly different pose:

They look very close, but upon close inspection you'll see the differences (i.e dog's head turned different direction).
