Sterling Elliott's Signed Card Collection
2 Attachment(s)
Does anybody know who Sterling Elliott is, or how he got a museum in Stuart, Florida?
Apparently, "the Elliott," built in 1961 by Harmon Elliott as a tribute to his father Sterling Elliott, and on November 18, 1961, was given to the non-profit Historical Society of Martin County, which has operated it ever since. Most of the memorabilia comes from father Sterling himself. According to Wikipedia, Elliott once "held the world record for the greatest baseball card collection in existence." I've never heard of the guy.... have you? Am I just ignorant? Anyway, the Elliott shows a signed T206 Johnny Evers as part of its collection. In fact, their website blog states that they have "baseball cards signed by the double-play combination Tinkers, Evers and Chance." Anybody ever seen these? Anybody got any opinions on the Evers below, or the Jennings? Or the collection as a whole? Looks like it purports to have a signed T206 of Miller Huggins. |
Inventor, business man, ...
Interesting that the Wikipedia link for him directly (and via the Elliott Museum page) talks a lot about his inventions (... the ball bearing, the egg carton, the paper cup, rack and pinion steering and the women's bicycle) and business life, but never once mentions sports, outside interests, etc...
Seems from examples on the museum site not all would not have been collected by Sterling himself, having passed in 1922. All in all, sounds like it'll be a neat place to visit if you're in Stuart once the new museum opens. |
Agreed. I put an email in to them to try to divine how they came about acquiring all those baseball cards. Hasn't anyone seen this collection?

Wow! You mean that museum existed in my own back yard??? I'm ready to go right now.........only an hour away! I figure I could camp-out and provide a full report in the morning.........................but alas, the museum is currently closed due to construction . The website is unclear as to when the grand opening is going to be.
Thanks for the great info! This forum is amazing. I get advice on talc, humidity, and now this!!! Lovely Day... |

That Evers is one terrible forgery. The Jennings scan is not the best, but it's safe to say that it suffers from a similar fate.
