Babe Ruth "cabinet"

This Babe Ruth "cabinet" sold last night and I'm curious what it is. It looks to me like it's a page cut out of a Baseball Magazine that's been placed inside a cabinet. Somebody paid nearly $400 for it ...

I saw that Chris. What I didn't like about it was the seller stating, " no returns accepted".
Better safe than sorry I say..

Looks like a modern-made fantasy piece to me........

For whatever reason, I've never trusted cabinets that are in those fold over holders.
Very interesting bid history too -- the bidder with a feedback number of 85 kept on repeatedly bidding on the last day, even when he was the high bidder -- he then continued his incremental bids when the eventual winner passed him.

Well it's certainly not a Studio photo from the photographer on the mount. You can tell by the moire pattern in the scan it's a printed photo and not a real photo.

Looks to definitely be a magazine cut-out. The trimmed caption at the bottom is a dead giveaway.

Also kind of odd. I remember a "Sussman" photo studio out of Pittsburgh. Never a "Sissman" studio.

I saw it too and at first though it was a put together fantasy piece too...

But, The obviously old (wear at bend) cabinet mount has "Babe Ruth" printed on it below the photo, thats what made me think it might be real.

In the early 1900s there were folders (like with the Ruth) where you slip the photo into the 'frame.' The photo can be removed and something else slipped in. The original photo wasn't glued in like with a cabinet. They are in the general style of cabinet cards except have a foldover cover. They were made for family photos, but commercial issues-- and the photos would be real photo not lithos or anything. The folder may be vintage, but the Ruth pic is an odd partner.

The folders aren't rare, but are much less plentiful than cabinets.

Ruth piece

It looks like the inside cover of a baseball magazine probably from 21-23 and put into what appears to be a 1930's graduation or wedding photographers matt board.

Has anyone looked at his previous sales as well as buyer list? Seems like he sells quite a bit of better pcs for the bay?

In my experience the overwhelming majority of fakes are created in such a way as to look real. Accordingly, I would put very little stock into the fact that the item might look old.
