How Many of Us Vintage Collectors Buy New Cards
1 Attachment(s)
I collect 19th Century etc. But I also enjoy 1950's Topps etc. I must admit I buy a new Topps Set every year. I just had to buy a pack today at the Supermarket checkout. How many of the Vintage Collectors out there still buy a Topps set or pack each year ?
|
one or two
I buy a few packs just to check out the new design
|
I buy a handful of packs each year. I occasionally buy a rookie card of a new player I like (especially Yankees), I keep buying less new stuff each year. But, I'm sure I'll always make a purchase or 2 here and there of certain cards.
Edited to add: I usually get the "itch" around spring training every year for newer things. I just need to resist scratching it! |
Great! Now I feel like I need to go grab a pack on the way home;)

I voted "never", but I have to admit that I did pick these up the other day. (20 years old, but not really "vintage.")

Allen & Ginter

I really don't have much to do with modern cards except that I love the Topps Allen & Ginter set. I feel that is the nicest looking set out there and it really appeals me being a vintage collector. I even have some graded by SGC becuase they look super nice in their holders.
|
I don't know why, and it doesn't really make sense, but for whatever reason I consider the shiney stuff to be for kids and the vintage to be for adults.
|
I also consider the new stuff to be for the kids. I buy my sons some new cards
every year and I usually use packs of new Topps cards as bribes/rewards for my sons Little league teams. |

I collect shiny, Jeff. What are you trying to say? |
I buy some packs...
I buy some packs, open them with the kids and then give them to my son.
|
I collect tons of new stuff every year. I especially like the rookie auto patch cards of LSU footballers and our beloved Saints.
|
I'll buy a high grade RC or Autograph here or there, some I have pulled from packs, then I try and consolidate the rest into vintage cards. Click on my link and check out my Albert Pujols /10 card in my 1981-Current folder. Some dudes would pay a fortune for that card.

And this from someone who got a 100 year old card in the mail just yesterday. CRAP! |
i wouldn't mind buying a carlos santana auto'd rc card or a clayton kershaw gu jersey card...collecting 100 yr old cards of guys u have no connection to can get boring.

Quan, This one??? Oh... The other Carlos Santana! |
I pick up a few now and then. Really enjoyed some of the new cards based on older sets.
|
how about another option
Only buy players or my favorite team individually...not in packs. |

I collect only 2 of the newer items, but certainly not the "high-end" $300-a pack-for-5-cards stuff. I only collect 2009 Goodwin Champions and 2009 Allen & Ginter; by far the prettiest cards, AND the most plain - simple and elegant. I found both to be reminiscent of the vintage stuff to a degree.
You know what's funny with the new stuff is that some of it, when trying to complete a set, is super tough - I mean, WAY more difficult than locating some 206's or 213's. For example, a Kristi Yamaguchi Auto card from 2009 Goodwin for $200??? With only 50 signed, it's considered a "short print." She lives like 5 blocks from where I do - I should just walk over there and ask her to sign the damn base card for me..... :D My most recent "new-stuff" acquisitions: |

Oh sorry about that! Please don't be offended, I was only trying to say that you have bad taste in cards. |

I remember Griffey PSA 9's going for around $2500-3000 back in 1994.
I picked mine up about a year ago for less than 10% of that. :D |
I collect in one month a Cobb card, Kaline card and a 2009 Topps Tiger Team set. I guess I want every Tiger I can get no matter what era.
|
The only new cards I buy are the ones of the older players. I don't mind spending $.50 on a new Cobb, Mathewson or Wagner at a show.
|
new
i haven't bought a new one in decades but sure did buy some great new ones
in the early 60's when i was a boy. best, barry |
I buy the A&G Hobby box every yr.
|
I grab a few packs every now & then, mostly of the older looking cards like Topps Heritage or Goudey.
In 2009 I stopped by a local shop and had the shop owner grab me two packs of Goudey off the shelf to buy and ended up getting a original 1933 Goudey in one of the packs. I thought it was kinda neat getting the Goudey original since its the first one I've ever owned. Jantz |
Andrew, are you serious? You pulled that N43??!!
|
I buy a case of Topps Heritage every year. It's fun to open and since the cards are worth so little you end up sending lots of doubles to friends to finish their sets.
|
I don't buy packs, boxes, or sets of modern issues. I do, however, have a modern player collection of Adam LaRoche (http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q...dam%20LaRoche/.) Towards the end of the month, I plan on launching adamlarochecollector.com

new cards
Used to buy the new rookie card sets (draft pick/future prospects etc) just to have any future no-no, 20 game winner, Cy young winner etc. But now just buy the individual rc. It's kind of funny because now when I go to the local card shop, he usually has the rc I'm looking for all ready to go:D

Gotta collect Pujols!
Dont see how you CANT collect this guy....
A pros Pro....an example for kids and a role model.... even us vintage collectors need to make room for some PUJOLS cards! |
The last new card I bought were complete sets of Topps and UpperDeck in 2002.
The last new pack I opened was 1982-I have unopened packs and sets from when I was in 11th grade (1982) at MT. ST. Joe High School to 2002 |

From Old Judge to New Cards
I've been active in the hobby since 1972 and am happy to say that I enjoy my modern Topps Heritage cards as much as I do my old Rose Co. baseball postcards. Depends on the day and the mood - that's the beauty of our hobby.
|
I buy several packs of the retro sets each year so I have something to get signed when I got to the ballpark and spring training.

Don't hold it against me
|
I like those poses, Martin. I just wish, for all the money Topps has, that they would go the distance and actually try to replicate the lithography style of the 1909-11 T206 set, instead of putting together designs that look like they placed a picture of the player in Photoshop and surrounded him with an old-looking border.
If anyone had the scratch to put together a world-class retro-looking set, it was Topps. |
I collect first and last number serial numbered cards (like 001/100 or 250/250) mainly because it gives me fun and interesting to do at the newer shows. I get pretty good buys on them, but sincerely doubt they will ever be worth more than I paid for them.
Also collect Marshall University stuff...I could do nothing but collect Moss or Pennington if I so chose. |
Just curious, what does a standard pack of Topps cards go for nowadays? I can remember buying cards (mid-70's) when I was a kid for a dime a pack. Also remember buying entire boxes at the local village store for under $10 per box.
I'm sure a lot of you can remember paying even less than 10 cents a pack. How much do they go for today? |
I picked up a couple packs of 2008 Topps Allen & Ginter the other day 3 for $10 at my local card shop.
The furthest back I remember was buying a cello pack of 1987 Topps for 75 cents. A lot more cards and much cheaper... |
Bought lots of shiny stuff until about 2 years ago when I got disgusted again. Still, I just can't help myself...I love to open packs. Bought a box of 2009 UD football, and was disappointed as usual. I'm going back to the card shop, but this time I'm going to buy 1981 Donruss Golf to open.
|
I stopped buying packs in the early-1990s, when the industry exploded with dozens of different series and artificially "valuable" inserts. Plus, as a teenager at that time, my money went toward other things.
I jumped into vintage cards about four years ago because I find them to be fascinating baseball artifacts. |
