Wow...I know nothing about these cards...but WOW!!!

barrysloate 12-11-2009 01:29 PM

Jimmy- they are not even high grade. Any insights you can share about what happened?

I am sure these are very rare and I have no problem with someone with a lot of money paying for what they like, but HOLY CRAP those are ugly cards.
When factoring in the condition it seems these are some of the most valuable cards in the hobby. I dont even know if some of the rarest 19th century cards we all covet would sell for 10K+ in that type of condition. I can only think of a few cards in the world that would bring that type of money for that condition. I never would have thought that a 1954-55 Hot Dog card would be worth more on average than sets like 4 Base Hits and G&B Chewing Gum.

Usually in a situation like this it's two guys going back and forth all night, but who knows.

ullmandds 12-11-2009 02:44 PM

crazy!!!!!!

Personally...I'd rather have a beat up t206 plank...or a decent 33-34 goudey lajoie...or an e94 set in good condition...or a run of t206 backs...including the toughies...shall I go on?

Funny or not so funny, dad used to carry a stack of about 50 to 60 of these to local shows back in the 1980s, I think he had $5 or $10 each on them and we couldn't give them away. He finally blew the stack out at $3 each. Of course we all have these horror stories I guess.

I won a much nicer 1955 Triandos in a past Huggins and Scott auction for about $400 so who knows what drives these prices.

Jimmy,

Barry, is that addressed to me? :)

James

barrysloate 12-11-2009 03:53 PM

Yes- do you prefer James?:o

Orioles1954 12-11-2009 03:58 PM

It's OK! My wife calls me Jimmy, my friends Jim and everyone else James :)

Without divulging too much info....we have a couple of well-funded bidders who are attempting complete sets. When these guys have completed said sets, who knows what will happen to the value.

I know what will happen to the value when they complete their sets...;)

1954-55 esskays

as with a lot of sets there always seems to be certain cards which are just a lot more difficult to find...the neil berry 54 for example went for almost the same price this time as last time he had it...with the buyers premium over 10k
that says there are at least 3 collectors or more that needed that card as u have to figure the last winner at 10k didnt bid again...the cards that go for 400 to 1000 are the same players you always see
just like felin franks everyone has whit wyatt and john meyer...
and they go for 2-5k if a robin roberts or richie ashburn shows up they too will sell for well over 10000
you can relate this to psa cards with low pops
a 1978 reggie jckson psa 10 pop of 1 sold for 3300 on ebay with 3 different bidders over $3000 the card books for $6
whats the better buy?
