Posted By: peter chao
Guys,

The new Beckett's quarterly indicates most T-206's going up. Beckett's is arguably the best all-around periodical price-guide. If Beckett's quarterly is the best then who is.

Peter

Posted By: leon
The 2007 Krause Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards is about as good as it gets for vintage card prices, in a periodical, imo. I was thumbing through it this morning and noted how many of the prices are spot on. Of course the drastic swings in the very best cards make it obsolete from day one...but it's still pretty good. It seems the more scarce, of higher the grade, the more the Krause is off, which makes sense.....regards

Posted By: T206Collector
...Peter, but looking at a periodical hard-copy price guide is essentially like reading a book full of numbers that don't mean anything.

For actual market activity and value of cards in the market the only guide that approaches accuracy is vintagecardprices.com. This is a historic resource -- something that has never been available. To now use a hard copy price publication would be like using an Encyclopedia Brittanica from the 1970's to write a research paper on the Space Shuttle.

Posted By: Bobby Binder
I would not even bother with any periodical because by the time they print them and distribute they are out date.

My solution to you if you want to see prices in the can is to hook up a wireless in your place and sit with your laptop and check my site.

Posted By: Dave
Bobby is right...anything already in print, how can you expect to be "current" values? An out of date price guide, is probably about half the money of what it would cost to join vintagecardprices.....I don't understand some people that spends thousands of dollars on cards but then get cheap everywhere else...

Posted By: barry arnold
With respect to hard copy, I believe that Leon is correct about the
2007 SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how accurate a number of the
T206 prices were. Granted the figures are only 'ballparkish' but still
pretty good ,particularly for the VG category. Yes, there are a number of
exceptions to the 'ballparkish' accuracy.
I particularly like the chronological index at the end of the volume which
not only makes it easier to find what you may be after but also gives you
an interesting glimpse of other issues of cards for the same time period which may have slipped your mind. With all due respect to Rich et al, i've had a very difficult time finding what i was after in the Beckett volume and also noted that
Beckett tends to keep the same narratives about the various issues (n.b.
2006 Beckett repeats some 2005 narratives verbatim, without referring to
new research relative to the various issues, vintage particularly. Still,
its contribution to the field of baseball cards has been tremendous. It
just needs quite a bit of rewriting to get it up to date methinks.

all the best,

barry
Posted By: Jay
Beckett has doubled the prices of commons and HOFers previously around 500 up to around 1000. The Mathewsons and Johnsons are now listed in the 2K range. Its about time that Beckett caught up with the increased prices.

T206kid

Posted By: fkw
The key word is "Guide"

SCD (Krause) Standard Catalog is the best for info on vintage cards and as a guide (est.) of their values. Beckett is for new stuff.

Crazy people with thick wallets paying crazy $$ will screw up any guides accuracy. This is true for any collectible.

Posted By: peter chao
Jim,

Your the one that is out of touch, from the dealers I speak with, apparently more than 50% of their customers buy ungraded cards. I suppose if it's a card in excess of $200, it's important to buy graded. But otherwise, I would be just as likely to buy an ungraded card from a dealer I know and trust.

Peter

Posted By: Trevor Hocking
I have found that the best place for card prices has been the SCD then auction realizations. I think it was said best here already, there're only GUIDES, bid what you think it's worth to you and you should come out ok most of the time, win or lose. IMO

As for who buys raw cards I DO. I would say that 90% of my collection is raw. But I have no problem with graded cards. I just love my cards in BINDERS!!! Binders RULE!!! So just to inform those who may not know, there're many great collections and many rare cards (yes high grade ones too) still RAW. I would think that about 40-50% (besides T206's and 52 Topps , man there is a ton of those on Ebay these days) of the cards out there are in graded form today. Maybe a little less than that. Sorry I didn't mean to hi-jack this thread (which I am sure I just did) but I don't understand it when people assume that if it's not graded it must not be out there and mine must be the best on the planet by now just because the pop reports says it is. Sorry just a little venting. Raw cards rule!!!

My 2¢
Trevor Hocking

Posted By: peter chao
Trevor,

I agree with you a 100%. Raw cards rule or will do so very soon. Pretty soon people will have no idea whether they should go with SGC, PSA or what not.

At that point in time they will simply buy raw cards and wait it out. When a clear market leader in the grading business emerges, that's when people will start buying graded cards again.

Peter
