1920 W519 strip card history

Posted By: Adam
Could anyone provide a brief history of the W519 strip cards? I am curious about the un-numbered 10 card set. Who distributed them? How were they distributed and what were they distributed in? What are guesses as to population? What were they "hand cut" out from? etc.

Thanks for any help!

Regards,
Adam

ps- My first W519 below (picked-up tonight), wish I knew more about it, hopefully I will!

Posted By: fkw
There is 3 W519 sets, and 1 related W521 set.

All 4 of these sets were cut from horizontal strips of 10 or 20?? As far as I know, like many strip cards, no one knows who the maker was.

W519-1 (Unnumbered) ... The set is complete at 10 different, all will have a blue background and the only player not found in the other related sets is Cicotte.

W519-2-1 ...20 cards in this numbered set, black numbers.

W519-2-2 ...?10? cards in this numbered set, blue numbers (different numbering), not all 10 cards have been found. Very Rare. (PS the #20 Schang listed in the 2008 SCD Catalog is really a W521).

W521 ... 20 cards in this numbered set. Similar to W519-2-1 except all have the negatives reversed.

W519-2-2

Posted By: S Gross
Love the w519/521's !!!!!!!!!!!
Although, Adam and I are possibly the only two people who care about the boxing counterparts. Here is some minor info, that might be of interest:

1 -- I have 18/20 of what I consider w521's. This is based that 5 images are reversed of their corresponding 1921 exhibits:

2 -- I have 5 "opposites," none of which are any of the above. So, the only way we can ever tell which Cline is what, is to find an uncut sheet. Although I kinda' like Cline fighting himself .

3 -- No. 19 Flamier can confirm they came in sheets of 20. Brennan, 14, also shows the same indication.

Gotta love The "Zulu Kid" flirting with that Rebel Oakes "border infringement." .............

Posted By: boxingcardman
Yes, Scott and I are the only ones who care...

The boxing set is 20 cards. Every one comes witn a reversed pose. There are also several color variations in the master set, and they are not shading variations but actual color changes. Certain cards are nearly always found cut too close on one side because that side had the copyright info or the set of 20 legend and kids scissored it off. #20 is a wrestler, Wladek Zbyszko.

As far as telling which ones are correct and which are reversed, with practically every fighter the correct ones will be in conventional (righthanded) stances.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc
