Other things that we here collect

I was wondering what other things us old baseball card collectors collect?

bbcard1 01-14-2013 08:56 AM

I collect all sorts of Marshall College/University memorabilia. I tend to pick up a rock from everywhere interesting I go to...don't know why, I just do. I am considering investing in a low-end antique car, a driver...but we will see. I also play Apba and probably also collect to some degree.

Bigb13 01-14-2013 09:03 AM

A rock very cool idea I would never have thought to do that. Rob ps I do have an 81 Corvette that's as old as I can afford lol

I collect some old coins, mostly wheat back pennies, but I've bought a few other things cheap I thought were cool, like these old coins:

jimivintage 01-14-2013 09:25 AM

I dabble in coins with my oldest daughter, but nothing worth more than face value. :)

My wife and I pick up a double shot glass at each place we vacation at. We don't even really use them, but they look cool.

And I guess I collect DVDs since I have a bajillion of them although I'm not REALLY collecting them!

atx840 01-14-2013 09:26 AM

Signed bank withdrawal slips.....all by me :(

bigwinnerx 01-14-2013 09:49 AM

Probably video games. I'm 34, so, NES/SNES were in the wheelhouse of my childhood. Still have a SNES set up in the house to go along with the 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS. Mostly buy, play and sell games though, don't really collect.

36GoudeyMan 01-14-2013 09:56 AM

Besides my meager card collection....

.... Golden Age (1938-1951) comics, 1840s British stamps (Penny Blacks and related items), 19th Century US coins (smaller denominations), US Supreme Court autographs... there's a LOT more time spent looking than buying so "collecting" may be more of an active verb than appropriate....

The Cascade Miner newspaper (1892-1912). There are only two known copies of the Miner (one at the Library of Congress & second at Roslyn, Washington Museum). I have more than 30 readable fragments. Last month, I went on a hike to the ghost town of Lester, Washington where I like to search the old homes for newspapers that were once used for insulation. Found a home falling down around itself with what appears to be hundreds of one weekly issue (October 10, 1907) stuffed into the walls. My most significant find to date. Been itching to get my hands on them but have to wait for permission from the landlord, Burlington Northern. It's been four weeks, still nothing.

Ronnie73 01-14-2013 11:32 AM

Coins, Stamps, Comicbooks, and Sportscards. At the moment i'm only interested in my tobacco cards. I still keep an eye out for the other stuff but don't buy any. I have too much at this point and don't even know what I have.

Runscott 01-14-2013 11:41 AM

Pre-ww2 pool cues, Edward Curtis photographs, pre-ww2 Stetson-related.

For you comic book collectors, I have about 1,000 mostly silver-age super-hero that I'm about to begin selling in $100+ lots - would prefer to trade for cards.

Writehooks 01-14-2013 11:53 AM

Posters and programs from 1960s heavyweight fights; pinbacks of the lineal heavyweight champions; items from George Wallace's presidential campaigns.

brian1961 01-14-2013 12:01 PM

I collect selected 1/43rd scale diecast and resin racing sports cars, a few Grand Prix, a very few NASCAR, a few Indianapolis 500, a few World Land Speed Record cars and WWS Boats, and a very few passenger cars. The era covers essentially 1929 to 1973, with a few exceptions older and more recent.

Along with this I dabble in various media related to the cars I collect, which complements the collection, as well as giving me more inspiration and relevance to why the particular car is important to me. Of such includes vintage and current magazines, books, VHS, and DVDs

The cars' individual histories relating to their given exploits, as well as their drivers, have moved me deeply for over 50 years. The passion is lava-hot.

Al C.risafulli 01-14-2013 12:08 PM

I have a pretty big music collection. I'm not much of a record collector type, I just buy a lot of music - vinyl records, CDs, digital downloads. Mostly contemporary independent rock, 1970s punk and 1950s bebop these days.

Someday I'll start collecting concert handbills and tin robots, because I love both, but I need a place to put them first. :)

I brew beer at home, so I always visit local breweries when I'm in a new town. Whenever I do, I try to pick up a pint glass with their logo on it to serve my beer in. Beer and baseball cards...a great combo!

Golden age comic books, especially any Fawcett Comics and Marvel Family. (Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr, etc)

I won't turn down the chance to buy anything golden age, I've just always been drawn to Fawcett Comics.

I don't know this is considered a collection or not, but I love real root beer. I try any hand-crafted ones that i see, and have over 50 bottles that I refuse to throw away. Is that collecting? :o

Side note, if anyone is interested in what some of the best root beers are, I'm your guy!:D

I have been collecting wine since 1999 with a focus on primarily California cult wines and some Bordeaux...luckily I can drink the stuff too!

My wine collection has grown in bottle count to exceed my T206 count with BOTH being very enjoyable! :D

Now those are some nice cards! I have one, but only in unlimited.

For those who aren't into them, that's The J Jackson, Ruth, Wagner, Plank, etc for the magic card crowd.
Not moneywise, but certainly in impact.
I had another of the big ones in Unlimited,(The Black Lotus) and the two tournaments I played it caused quite a stir when I played it. Of course, I lost every single game I played for almost 2 years until I traded it away.......Yes, the card was the star.

Postcards focused on Lincoln, Nebraska. I have probably 700-800 different. It fulfills my "need" to collect since the stuff I really love (Lincoln minor league and Nebraska Indians) shows up so seldom anymore that I get bored. I also sideline into Disneyland and Disney World postcards...you'd be surprised how many different postcards there are of those two parks.

Jantz 01-14-2013 09:49 PM

I collect Native American artifacts. By "collect" I mean that I walk the fields and river banks looking for them.

Using any type of flint they could fashion, sometimes you find a flint artifact that has been made from a certain type of flint and can be traced to the exact area where the flint was harvested by the Native Americans.

I enjoy it because you never know what you're going to find. I've found things like old coins, musket balls and even a prehistoric horse tooth.

Very cool, I see plenty of others with interest in coins. I actually collected coins before baseball cards at a very young age but coins are now a very distant 2nd to Detroit cardboard. With coins I have a narrow focus. I only collect coins from 1887 (in honor of the Detroit Wolverines Championship and the Old Judge set which was then in full swing). I prefer business strikes over proofs and prefer NGC holders although I do not like the new NGC holders. So I'm still searching for a higher grade 3 cent piece and quarter graded in an older NGC holder as well as a business strike half. At least I was able to knock out all the gold before it skyrocketed. 1887 is one of the tougher years with six of the thirteen denominations having 10,000 or less minted (that's fairly rare in the world of coins).

I always thought 1909 would be a fun year to collect as well. 1909 was the last year of Indian Head, first year of Lincoln (including the 1909 S VDB). But I'll leave 1909 to someone who is into T206.

Love seeing what ya'll collect =)

As the name indicates, I am a (ball) python factory. Ball pythons are great because a) they are docile b) have dozens of genes that completely change their appearance and c) are big enough to be cool (3-4ft, 1-3lbs) but not scary big. I have a dedicated snake room in my house that is kept at 80F with 60% humidity year round (my wife is the best). It is a fairly small operation: I have two breedable males, six or so breedable females, and about ten sub-adults/hatchlings. I keep them in the Cadillac of snake habitats: ARS caging (see attached picture). I hook up a proportional thermostat (e.g., if my goal is 90F and I'm at 89F, it will only give 10% power) to the snake rack which has flexwatt heat panels to distribute heat. I've attached two pictures: one is a Pastel - Black Pastel - Ghost and the other is a Pastel - Spider - Ghost.

stewbacca 01-14-2013 10:39 PM

I collect baseball autographs. I have 3 different items going on at the same time. I am trying to get complete sets autographed. I have about 150 signed cards from the 1969 topps set(my birth year). The set is complete, just trying to get as many signed as possible. The topps 1976 set is another one that I am working on and have over 200 of those cards signed. The 3rd item I have been getting signed since I picked it up in 1990. It is the Topps 40 years of baseball book. It shows every card from 1951-1990 and is great for getting autographs in. I crossed over 600 signatures in it this summer and love getting the no name players of the 60's 70's and 80's to sign the book.

Nice collection Joe. I totally agree with you about the new NGC holders, I don't like them either. My collecting interests are U.S. Half Dimes. Funny you mention the 1909 set for T206 collectors, I have been thinking about a 1909-1911 coin set to display with my cards.

When I was in elementary school I was a huge dork (still am) and I put together a set of the Star Wars figures and left them in their boxes. I would do chores on Saturday and when I was done, my parents would take me to Toys R' Us and let me get a figure ($5 worth each visit). They were great parents, and I have really nice memories from this. I also eventually picked up some of the figures from the 70's, and I also had a few old Marvel and DC comics too. I think I always liked older things as opposed to modern.

I also collect albums and have a lot of the Beatles and Rolling Stones (almost all of the Beatles full length albums, but not quite).

Also, Salvador Dail lithographs ... my Dad has Manhattan Skyline, Loves Promise, The Bull Fighter, and La Grande Pavon. Some of his work is absolutely trippy.

Nice!... similarly, I had a sweet Star Wars collection as a kid, but they all got thrown out during a move when I was about 9. In a quest to reconnect with my distant childhood past (I was 12 or 13), I found a guy that sold unopened figures at the Santa Cruz flea market. I went back 2-3 times and picked up a couple dozen for btwn $4-$10 each. Still have them and a Jabba the Hut playset stuffed in a box in storage... with my even dorkier:p old school, but working Atari stand up arcade machine.

Golf balls from vacation places or courses I have played/visited. Pebble Beach is the latest, however all I did was hit some around on the putting green. My family didn't want me to spend $600 and an entire day there while on vacation :D.

I've been doing that since my early teens. I now probably have 700-800 in total as my dad would tell all his golf buddies I likes logo balls and he would get all of them. I bet when I go back home this weekend he'll have 4 or 5 sitting there for me.

The only ones that get displayed are the top 50 that are most meaningful/memorable.

I also love trying new craft beers where-ever I go.

I collect Starting Lineups...so much so, that I started a grading company that grades Starting Lineup figures, much like AFA, but we only grade Starting Lineup figures. We will be launching the company officially in Feb. I have staff who I consult with who worked on the Starting Lineup line, sculpted the figures and painted the original SLU's.

For me, they are like a 3D baseball card and look great displayed in our custom acrylic cases and add value with a high grade.

I have every figure produced of some of my favorite players like Michael Jordan and Ken Griffey Jr. to name a few as well as many variants and error figures.

I have been hooked on them since 1988 and have been collecting on and off every since. As a kid, I was well known in the community for my room with hundreds of Starting Lineups on display.

It also helped that Kenner, the company who produced the figures was in my hometown growing up.

Hi Bill,

Glad you got to hit some on the putting green. All my wife let me do was walk around the club (extremely impressive!). In her defense, we were on the 17 mile drive and then headed down along Big Sur. For my money, that is one of the most beautiful spots in the US.

She was America's first Peter Pan and the inspiration for Jane Seymour's time travel movie "Somewhere in Time." But I collect her just because I find her attractive.

Probably video games. I'm 34, so, NES/SNES were in the wheelhouse of my childhood. Still have a SNES set up in the house to go along with the 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS. Mostly buy, play and sell games though, don't really collect.

Me too. I still have a NES hooked up and I play it fairly often. I don't really "collect" the games either, I basically just have an accumulation of games that I've picked up for it over the years.

For a long time I just assumed that Sarah Bernhardt was the inspiration for that movie. That got me interested in her, and I added her to my 'must find' autograph list. Ended up picking up two at the same time, including a signed Nadar cabinet.

You have good taste - to me, Maude Adams was one of the most beautiful celebrities of that period.

Scott - She was a popular actress. They even made a full size solid gold statue of her. Signed cabinets are great. I've seen some sell for hundreds of dollars.<p>Years ago I attended a book fair where I purchased over 100 turn-of-the-century tobacco actress cards. While thumbing through them, I saw the usual assortment of overweight women in tights or other unusual costumes. Then suddenly this card appeared and I was smitten. :) That was the start of my collection.

I collect most things from the 1930's ; I don't know why....lately I've been looking at a '38 Packard convertible , white , with sidemounts , (we live near Hershey ,Pa. where the AACA holds the big show every October ) but ''SheWhoMustBeObeyed'' isn't of the same mindset just yet-......I'm probably the only guy on this forum with that problem.:)
