Re-visiting PIEDMONT 460 Fac. #42 cards....are there any more than 72 of them ?
The PIEDMONT FACTORY #42 cards are somewhat easier to find in the T205 set than in the T206 set. Except for the
32 subjects which I refer to as the "Exclusive 32". These T205 subjects were printed with the A - B - C - D pattern. Here is an example from my Miller Huggins run. The PIEDMONT FACTORY #42 cards in this group are difficult to find. In the past 7 years, I have found only 4 of these 32 guys with the PIEDMONT FACTORY #42 backs. . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...Piedmont42.jpg . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...edmont42bx.jpg A - B - C - D sub-set (includes 32 - T205 subjects) http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...Huggins25x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...uggins25bx.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
Re-visiting PIEDMONT 460 Fac. #42 cards....are there any more than 72 of them ?
A typical T205 back run comprises of 11 to 13 cards. Here is my complete run (11 cards) of Harry Wolter. Wolter was printed in the Exclusive 32 group.
This was my 1st T205 run that I completed. I have several other runs which are near completion. I am especially interested in NY Yankees players. Note....Wolter was not printed with the PIEDMONT Factory #42 back. My experience doing T205 runs has provided me an appreciation for the printing patterns of the T205's. Here are 2 major examples of these patterns: 1.... DRUM cards and HINDU cards are mutually-exclusive. 2.... the A - B - C - D cards and AMERICAN BEAUTY (Green) cards are mutually-exclusive. A NET54 "reader" emailed me regarding the T205 group, which I refer to as the "Exclusive 32".
I have confirmed that exactly 32 subjects (of the 208) in the T205 set were printed with the AMERICAN BEAUTY, BROAD LEAF, and CYCLE backs. To date, 27 (of these 32) subjects in this group have been confirmed with DRUM. Eventually, I expect these five will be discovered with DRUM.... Jack Quinn is another one of my T205 Yankees which was printed in the EXCLUSIVE 32 group. I only need one card to complete this run.
You guessed it.... it's the DRUM. Furthermore, I need not search for a PIEDMONT #42 card of Quinn because it appears that HASSAN Factory #649 and PIEDMONT #42 are mutually-exclusive with respect to subjects in the EXCLUSIVE 32 group. My favorite T205 is Miller Huggins. I have included him in my Yankees collection. Huggins had a keen eye for talent. As Manager of
the Yankees (1918), he persuaded Col. Jacob Ruppert (Yankees owner) to acquire Babe Ruth from Boston in 1919. The T205 Huggins is one of the few guys in the Exclusive 32 group that was printed with the PIEDMONT Factory #42 back. The DRUM back for Huggins has not yet been confirmed. However, since he was printed with the brown AMERICAN BEAUTY back, I expect his DRUM card will eventually be discovered. Furthermore, I also need a HASSAN Factory #30 to complete this run. However, I'm more interested in real-photo, black & white cards of WaJo, especially his 1916, 1917, and 1921-22 issues. I'm willing to trade my Piedy 42 for a black & white card of WaJo with a scarce ad back. A trade could be consummated at the Net54 dinner at the Chicago National.

Ted knows the 42's are near and dear to my heart. Being in NC I decided to collect these backs for both the T206 and T205 sets. One card I want to upgrade is the T205 Evers. If anyone has a 2 or better let me know.
I don't know of any new discoveries of 42's since the Tinker showed up a few years ago. I believe Ted had seen the card before but no picture had been taken. The same 4 culprits in the T206 set that were thought to be verified have yet to turn up. These names can be found in the T206 PD 42 set list. Thanks Ted for bringing up these 42's once again. |

Hey guys,
So far, we have only 23 different T206 subjects on display with PIEDMONT 460 Factory #42 backs in this thread. I expected at least 36 of the known 72 subjects with this rare back would have been posted. So, come on guys, let us put on a show here and post more of them. Hi Ted - Are Frank Smith the players you are looking for?
|
This is a stretch because I am matching a first name to a last name but...
In 1910, Sherry Magee had his best season, leading the league in R, RBI, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, TB, and WAR (most, but not all, of these categories were also career bests). In 1959, Larry Sherry was the World Series MVP, going 2-0 for the Dodgers with an 0.71 ERA and saving the two games he did not win (he did not start a game but finished every game the Dodgers won). I am not sure if these names "coincide" enough to be the answer Ted is looking for...if not, I will keep looking. Edited to add: it turns out Sherry is not a "1950's Topps guy" since his first card was in 1960. So I will try again tomorrow. |

Certain Bob "Dusty" Rhoades cards are considerably tougher to find than other common T-cards.
Net54 member, Rob McKenzie, has searched for many years for the 1910 COUPON Rhoades card to complete his 1910 COUPON set. T3 set collectors will tell you that the Rhoades (arm extended) card is very, very difficult to find. I think when Cleveland sent Rhoades to the Kansas City Blues (Feb 1910) American Lithographic subsequently stopped printing him. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...tyRhoades2.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
